TANZ IM AUGUST — FESTIVAL OF DANCE RETURNS WITH INNOVATIVE PERFORMANCES IN NEW AND UNEXPECTED PLACES

From industrial relics to flower-filled gardens, this year Tanz im August is bringing movement to all kinds of new and unexpected places. Now in its 33rd edition, the festival for contemporary dance has lined up 70 performances featuring more than 100 artists from 20 countries. The program returns to regular venues like Hebbel am Ufer and Sophiensaele but also to the green expanse of Gärten der Welt in Marzahn, where Berlin choreographer Constanza Macras is staging an open-air premiere of her new piece Stages of Crisis (13.–.14.08.2021). Since the tickets for the show are also valid for entry to the park, you can head to the venue early and enjoy the gardens before the performance. Over in Oberschöneweide is another unique venue: Mahalla, a recently opened space for art, music, spirituality, science and community in a former AEG turbine hall. This industrial environment will stage three performances of Archipelago from Stephanie Thiersch and Brigitta Muntendorf (20.–22.08), whose unconventional work evolves from utopia to realism and seems a perfect fit for this out-of-the-ordinary space.

As ever, the program features forms that originate from all over the world, such as the spiritual practices and shamanic dances of different Asian communities which you can discover at Choy Ka Fai’s Cosmic Wander at the Kindl gallery in Neukölln. The Berlin-based Singaporean artist will also appear at HAU1 from 12. to 15.08 to present his piece on Indonesian folk dance called Postcolonial Spirits that mixes live movement in Berlin with a streamed performance from Java. Meanwhile, Mailles (14. & 15.08 at the Volksbühne) from British-Rwandan choreographer Dorothée Munyaneza brings on stage five women from mixed cultural backgrounds for an interdisciplinary piece that blends poems, flamenco dance, performative art and songs.
