FROM GALLERY TO GALLERY: ACROSS THE CITY WITH GALLERY WEEKEND

FROM GALLERY TO GALLERY: ACROSS THE CITY WITH GALLERY WEEKEND

After the first day of Gallery Weekend, your health app should show at least 25,000 steps walked, otherwise you’re doing something wrong. To make sure your pedometer (not to mention your creative mind) is happy with your tour through the city, let’s start at ChertLüdde in Schöneberg. Artist Patrizio di Massimo paints his friends, family and often himself in oil on canvas. Enriched with theatrical gestures and mythical creatures, he creates urban fantasies that don’t always invite you to dream. His notebooks, in the tradition of surrealist “automatic writing”, can now be viewed for the first time in Schöneberg. Also at ChertLüdde, Álvaro Urbano takes us outside, to Tiergarten. Inspired by Foucault’s concept of heterotopia, he explores spaces that follow their own rules — such as the cruising area around the Löwenbrücke. While Patrizio di Massimo and Álvaro Urbano raise questions about masculinity and desire, Šejla Kamerić places women at the center. At Tanja Wagner, she combines handcrafted black crochet objects made by women in Sarajevo with analog instant prints.

Questions of gender and sexuality are also central to the work of Jade Guanaro Kuriki-Olivo, better known as Puppies Puppies. Kuriki-Olivo adopted the pseudonym in 2018 to create a persona detached from gender, age and origin. In her latest works, Puppies Puppies plays with pop-cultural references at Trautwein Herleth, building a world somewhere between Pop Art and Grindr profiles. At Noah Klink, Sebastian Jefford, an artist fluent in a wide range of media, is exhibiting. His first solo show at the gallery brings together sculptures and drawings that merge comic influences with contemporary imagery. Diane Severin Nguyen, known for her disturbingly beautiful visual worlds, is presenting new photographs and video works at Molitor. Video is also a medium mastered by Cyprien GaillardSprüth Magers in Mitte is exhibiting Gaillard’s “Retinal Rivalry”, a cinematic 3D journey through Germany — from Saxony to Munich’s Theresienwiese. Wrap up the gallery marathon on Sunday from 8:30 pm at the finissage of Laure Prouvost at Kraftwerk Berlin. The installation, made possible by the LAS Art Foundation, ends on a grand note: Kukii, who composed Prouvost’s soundscape, and her artistic partner Howie Lee invite you to a music ceremony with a brass ensemble and choir.
