WHITE CUBE JUNGLE — THE (UN)NATURAL ART OF PLANTS

WHITE CUBE JUNGLE — THE (UN)NATURAL ART OF PLANTS

Tonight (10.3.2016) the Sexauer gallery opens their new exhibition White Cube Jungle, and true to the name, their three artists will be transforming the empty space of the exhibition cube into a jungle, with artificial nature and art derived from plant materials. Belgian artist Jofroi Amaral takes the raw plant form and paints with it, using the roots as a brush to create sweeping, shaded paintings before replanting the temporary tool. Toshihiko Mitsuyacrafts plants from aluminum, using only one piece of foil per two meter tall plant, and Alexander Skorobogatov not only creates plants from colored silicone, but also uses plants as subject matter in his semi-abstract painted works. The exhibition is centred around questioning the role of the plant in art history; the mythical image, the symbolic status, and the anthropocentric gaze that we use when looking at nature.
