MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO KREUZBERG’S CHAOTIC HUB — KOTTI ISLAND DISC RELEASE NIGHT AT TRESOR

MUSICAL TRIBUTE TO KREUZBERG’S CHAOTIC HUB — KOTTI ISLAND DISC RELEASE NIGHT AT TRESOR

Kottbusser Tor may not be geographically in the middle of Kreuzberg, but it is its undisputed center. U-Bahn above, U-Bahn below, roundabout all around, pavements full of pigeon droppings. It is the unwashed navel of the city, a gateway to limbo and paradise at the same time. If Orpheus were to descend to the underworld in Berlin, he would do it at Kotti. There are plenty of songs the poet could sing about this place: from Ideal to Peter Fox, Kreuzberg’s hub of interchange has inspired countless musicians. Now an entire album is dedicated to it, and it is anything but a mere collection of samples: Kotti Island Disc from producer Cecilia Tosh will be released tomorrow (12.05.2023) as an online release on Tresor Records. The release follows the exhibition of the same name that Tosh brought to Kotti and its surroundings in January.

Field recordings and observations of Kotti are central to the work. The result is ten tracks – musical interpretations of the place in all its multifaceted fantasy. Ten very different artists take you on an auditory journey through Kottbusser Tor, a snapshot of an urban island whose change seems faster and more constant than anywhere else in the world. The result is music that almost seems like a photograph. It brings the city into your headphones, and your legs to the city: tonight (11.05.) at 23h is the release night at Globus (Tresor). Participating artists include: Zettka, Ray Kajioka, Cecilia Tosh, Philipp Gorbachev, Jon Hester, Sofie Superflyin Jackson, .VRIL, Kat Davids, Rocko Garoni and Solid Traveller.

EN ROUTE: AXEL ARIGATO’S MUSIC TRUCK MAKES A STOP AT RAW-GELÄNDE

EN ROUTE: AXEL ARIGATO’S MUSIC TRUCK MAKES A STOP AT RAW-GELÄNDE

Fashion and music – that’s a match made in heaven. The two inspire each other and are twice as fun when they’re combined. What would a concert be without the eye-catching stage looks, what would a fashion show be without the fitting soundtrack – and what would your night out be without the carefully chosen outfit? Exactly! The creators of the brand Axel Arigato, founded in Sweden, also love music and, in general, creating experiences. They see their brand, founded in 2014, as a stage and have made it big – not only through Instagram and a store in London – but also a festival back in Copenhagen. If a truck with great sounds were to pull up on the RAW-Gelände, let’s say – it could be one of those moments: one to be remembered. Not only because the truck is yellow, in keeping with Axel Arigato’s style and – to match what marked the brand’s success – looks like a shoebox. It’s also because the lineup is curated by Berlin’s hyped music and broadcasting community, Hör. As a result, the lineup is fresh: among others, Lily Ackerman, Cecilia Tosh (Kotti Island) and Tommy Holohan, known for her heavy tech house, will be on the decks. In other words, Saturday won’t just be hot hot hot in terms of the weather, but also because the RAW-Gelände will briefly be transformed into an open-air party. It might just be one of those unforgettable Berlin moments that not only looks and sounds good, but is simply unique.

DREAMS, TRAGEDY, PIGEON POO — AN AUDIOVISUAL EXPLORATION AROUND KOTTBUSSER TOR

DREAMS, TRAGEDY, PIGEON POO — AN AUDIOVISUAL EXPLORATION AROUND KOTTBUSSER TOR

There are many questions those living in Berlin may have about Kotti. Musician Cecilia Tosh is also asking questions. One of these is: What does the Kotti sound like? What began with field recordings and interviews, she later developed, with eight other musicians, into an album. A further collaboration with 21 visual artists saw this album grow into a site-specific exhibition at and about the Kottbusser Tor. Who actually lives here? What is it like to work here? What do the people of Charlottenburg think about the place? And the tourists? How is Kotti interpreted cinematically, in literature and music? Can social urban development take place here? And what exactly is that supposed to be? The audiovisual exploration tour of this non-place between transit and home, utopia and limbo, can be experienced in January (06-29.01.2023), and goes by the name “Kotti Island“. The artistic works can be found at nine different locations. For example, a performance by residents under the direction of choreographer Katharina Scheidtmann will take place in the aquarium, a space hosted by Südblock, or you can sample your very own Kottitrack of field recordings in the Paloma Bar. How does Kotti feel? This place of transition, this ecosystem, this slowly pulsating, all devouring animal… How does Kotti think? How does it live, move, breathe? And how do we experience it? Many questions are answered here, many are raised. When I think of Kotti, the first thing that comes to mind is the smell: warm strawberries and urine. Just so very Berlin. Even in winter.
