If you’ve spent the last few days in Berlin, you’ve likely used up all your sunscreen supplies and the last of your spare change from piggy banks, trouser pockets, and the bottom of every handbag you own for every scoop of ice cream we desperately needed this week. (And there were quite a few.) Anyone who’s had their fill of the usual ice cream flavors will get a taste for it again at Amatō. Since mid-June 2025, Amatō has been serving homemade ice cream, cakes, and drinks with an Asian twist — from flavors such as Black Sesame & Thai Tea to Pandan or Vietnamese Coffee. The range is complemented by patisserie classics with modern flavor combinations, such as the already popular vegan yuzu cake, which not only tastes like the citrus fruit but looks like it too. There is a wide range of sorbets for vegans, and the drinks are also served as vegan options. For dessert, there is classic espresso, iced matcha, ube latte, or “Tra Da”: a refreshing Vietnamese green tea. Combine a drink and ice cream in one and order an affogato. This is not only available in the classic form with vanilla ice cream and a hot espresso shot, but also as a matcha and hojicha variant.
Behind Amatō is an experienced team: Viet Anh is the founder and has been working in the Berlin restaurant scene for over ten years. Together with Berni, a pastry chef from the fine dining scene, Duong, helping in the production and Heidi, the brand and social media manager, he has developed a range that takes him back to his childhood. The creations are inspired by flavors he and his family grew up with. Mostly inspired by East Asia, he produces everything locally. The official opening will take place on July 11th, with new varieties, art, and small specials. If you look closely, you’ll spot Armin, Viet Anh’s dog and official mascot, in the logo. So it goes without saying that you can come along with your four-legged friend!
