ANA SANTOS RECOMMENDS: BEKAREI — A BAKERY & CAFÉ

Since I am Portuguese and love a good baked-good, I couldn’t help but fall in love with Bekarei in Prenzlauerberg. This Greek-Portuguese bread-and-sweets café-and-shop is the perfect place to enjoy a tasty Sunday breakfast. Some highlights include their American style pancakes and bacon, German breakfast plate, or Tiropitakia, a spinach cheese pastry. I highly recommend fortifying your morning with their beet root mix, a fruit-and-veggie smoothie. The bright color and the sweet flavor will immediately wake up your taste buds. The café’s charming interior should cheer you up too. In 2007 the two owners, Paula and George, took over a former GDR bakery and kept a touch of its 70’s flair. (Photos: Sasha Kharchenko)
