A RURAL RESIDENCY: INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS AT ART BIESENTHAL

A RURAL RESIDENCY: INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS AT ART BIESENTHAL

Formerly the site of a 14th century mill on the nearby river Finow, this country pile is now home to the country art residency Art Biesenthal that opens its doors again this year. The current owner discovered the dilapidated mill and transformed this picturesque location into an expansive 300 sq.m exhibition space and guest house with unique charm and an unmistakable stucco façade. A co-working space and cafe by Sankt Oberholz adds to the attraction. Every year, selected artists live and work on the site: Alicja Kwade, Norbert Bisky and Michael Sailstorfer have already been guests, the exhibitions a reflection of their experience there. This year, 35 international and national artists are exhibiting their works, including Dennis Feddersen, Markus Kiebel, Andreas Mühe and Oskar Marie Rink. The vernissage will be accompanied by DJs, live performances and picnics in the lush meadows. It makes the hour-long drive to Biesenthal well worth it. SCHLOSS ARENDSEE: THE ENCHANTED 12–BED RETREAT FOR YOUR NEXT GROUP GETAWAY

SCHLOSS ARENDSEE: THE ENCHANTED 12–BED RETREAT FOR YOUR NEXT GROUP GETAWAY

Always dreamt of living in a real–life castle? Whether for a team-building trip or a big birthday or wedding, Schloss Arendsee offers you a wonderful setting. This country house was built in 1843 and sits in the Uckermark region of Brandenburg, only two hours by car from Berlin. Arriving there, the Cee Cee team were astounded: huge halls, a grand piano, bedrooms for up to 22 guests and even a retro school gymnasium next door. It’s the perfect place to let off steam, whether by exploring the countless rooms, lounging in the antique armchairs, boating on the lake or balancing on the SUP board. And if the 205,000 m² grounds aren’t enough for you, your friendly hosts will point you to surrounding lakes and forests, or indeed the alpaca farm around the corner. In the evening you can make yourself comfortable in the library, use the pool table and cook up a big meal in the kitchen…or take it to the wood-fired barbecue outside. We’re already planning our return so we can feel like 19th century lords and ladies again. (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Schloss Arendsee & Cee Cee Creative)

K.W.A: THE BERLIN KEBAB SHOP WITH ATTITUDE

K.W.A: THE BERLIN KEBAB SHOP WITH ATTITUDE

Have you ever noticed how few places there are in Mitte to get a great Döner? With the opening of K.W.A (short for Kebab with Attitude) that’s all started to change. The idea for something more than just an average Döner stand came from friends Jannis, Deniz and Daniel, who, after a successful pop-up in Schöneberg, decided to set up shop. The spot needed to be something special – original kebabs with a little bit of attitude. The menu ranges from the classic versions to more creative Döner, like the “K.W.A Funky Mango” with chicken, mango cranberry chutney and coconut sauce, or the “K.W.A Moringo” with halloumi, caramelized pineapple and guacamole. The meat is sustainably sourced, and can be served either in a dürüm, pide, or on a platter. They have vegetarian options and mezze and sides too. Don’t forget to try the beetroot with walnuts and grapes. Satisfy your sweet tooth on a hot day with an Ayran soft-serve ice cream with baklava – a magical combination of sweet, salty, and refreshing, best enjoyed at a mosaic-tiled table on the cosy terrace. This new spot makes kebabs the Berlin way, never neglecting its origins or tradition, but always with attitude. (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Johanna Rademacher-Flesland)

FLOWERS WITH A GREEN ETHOS AT BLUMEN GOLDBECK

FLOWERS WITH A GREEN ETHOS AT BLUMEN GOLDBECK

Can you run a flower shop sustainably? The florists behind Wedding flower shop Blumen Goldbeck have shown that you indeed can. In this lovingly furnished oasis – the highlight of which is a colourfully decorated tree that towers over the shop – you will find flowers and plants sourced exclusively from sustainable and/or regional suppliers. From packaging to the cleaning materials, everything here is 100% eco-friendly and sustainable. Owner Lilli Erasin doesn’t use plastic in the shop and flowers are not wrapped in it. They only sell products that support people and nature, such as their edible herbs from organic nurseries. The aim here is for sustainable closed–loop systems where as little as possible is thrown away. Thus, flowers that are not sold during the day are dried and used for wreaths and flower arrangements or pressed into beautiful embroidery frames. It’s clear how much love and thought goes into every detail here. And the best thing: the sustainable flowers don’t cost any more than elsewhere. (Text: Louisa Sodji / Photos: Blumen Goldbeck)

EVENT SPACE FABRIK 23 — RECOMMENDED BY NOEMI DULISCHEWSKI

EVENT SPACE FABRIK 23 — RECOMMENDED BY NOEMI DULISCHEWSKI

When I was invited to peek behind the scenes of Fabrik 23 in January 2019, my heart beat faster – it’s a 100 year old factory hidden in the heart of Wedding. Wandering from room to room, there is so much to discover: meticulously restored workbenches that serve as cooking stations, hand-crafted tables made from old Berlin floorboards, antique church benches and bar tables made from converted gymnastic bars – even a green winter garden with centuries-old terracotta tiles and a fireplace. I could have stayed here forever! It’s not just the beautiful interior that impresses, but also the culinary genius of catering chef Guido Vinci. We were served cremant, fresh oysters on ice and homemade truffle pasta, all at a long table with a DJ in the background. Until now, you could only rent this space for private events, but as of 10.08.2019 a regular Italian Fine Dining event will take place every two months, with changing themes around Italian culinary culture. It’s no doubt the best opportunity to explore this historic building. (Text: Noemi Dulischewski / Photos: Fabrik 23)

After spending 14 years abroad, Noemi Dulischewski returned to Berlin in January 2018. She is the founder of Brünch (see our feature here)
