SHORTCUT TO THE BEACH: NORD/NORDOST SURF FILM FEST

SHORTCUT TO THE BEACH: NORD/NORDOST SURF FILM FEST

We love our city, but there is just one major downside — it’s nowhere near the ocean. Well, dive into some celluloid waves by watching surf movies instead thanks to the Nord / Nordost Surf Film Fest. Travel back in time to the 1980s with the “Biarritz Surf Gang“, whose wild lifestyle of Sex, Drugs, and Big Waves is a stunning story set around Le Grande Plage. A lot has changed since the early years of surf culture in Europe. One thing, however, is still the same: If you surf, you get off (or get carried away). Escape society or everyday life and experience adventure in the hollow of a wave — at least until it crashes in on itself and wipes you out. Heading to Iceland for a surf? Why not! Impressive shots from that trip and others like it can be seen this Friday and Saturday. The crew organizing the festival is bringing their best to the finale: not just the movie highlights from the previous program, but also premiere screenings, a photo exhibition, and a party with music by Chatburn and Thomas Andersen — and then DJ Team Freezing takes over the speakers. If you can’t surf in Berlin, you can always dance at least.(Text: Verena Schwarz / Photo: Dylan Gordon)

SIMPLY MODERN DINING — MICHELBERGER RESTAURANT

SIMPLY MODERN DINING — MICHELBERGER RESTAURANT

It’s all too easy to overlook dining options in hotels, but Michelberger Restaurant is an incredible example of what you might be missing by doing so. Tiled walls glow with warm light from starlike orbs that dangle from the ceiling, and long communal tables are bedecked with flowers, candles and inviting place settings. The food reflects the effortless space with dishes that are refined in their simplicity – a true homage to the quality of Michelberger’s ingredients. From the house-cured duck breast, sliced thin to delicately shelter fragrant melon and finished with fresh herbs to the smooth, smoked mashed potatoes topped with slightly sweet fermented peach and salty, crispy bits of black pudding, Chef Alan Micks takes you on a journey using solely organic ingredients, that are, where possible, locally sourced and seasonal. Pair that with an attentive, knowledgeable service staff, and you’ve got a restaurant that’s raising the bar on approachable modern dining in Berlin – one just happens to be in a hotel. DRIVE HOSTS: ARS ELECTRONICA IN BERLIN & THIRD LANDSCAPE

DRIVE HOSTS: ARS ELECTRONICA IN BERLIN & THIRD LANDSCAPE

For new perspectives on digital encounters and the human environment, we suggest you take a visit to Drive. Volkswagen Group Forum, where two exciting exhibitions are on view until 26 October. The sixth digital media art exhibition at the forum is curated by Ars Electronica, which organizes one of the world’s most important yearly media art festivals in Linz, Austria. This time around, they challenged 14 international artists to focus on the theme of ‘encounters’ and human relationships with technology. From visual research of environmentally affected insects to the invisible sound on electromagnetic waves, the forms take shape to tell a story, deepened by the supporting works of the second exhibition: “Third Landscape”, featuring monochrome photographs by Volker Kreidler. Dive into these varied perspectives, and form your own along the way. (Text: Devan Grimsrud / Photos: Volker Kreidler, Drive. Volkswagen Group Forum)

THIS SUMMER — RIDE YOUR BIKE TO HABERMANNSEE

THIS SUMMER — RIDE YOUR BIKE TO HABERMANNSEE

Habermannsee is featured in our Cee Cee No.2 Book, which is available for purchase here.

Every year, there’s hype over Berlin’s best new secret lake to cool down in. Instead of following the crowds, I usually browse maps online and search for the “blue spots” that surround the city by the hundreds. However, if I want to go to a lake that’s not too far and easily reachable by tram or bike, I always end up at the perfect place for me: Habermannsee. The shore is dotted with plenty of great sunbathing areas, grassy spots for the grown-ups, and sandy beaches with a good stretch of shallow water for the little ones. When the weather is hot and the sun is shining, don’t waste time searching for a shoreside haven — just take your bike to Habermannsee. (Text: Sven Hausherr / Photos: Daniel Farò)

ROBERT STRACK RECOMMENDS: BRICOLE — BAR HORS D’ŒUVRE

ROBERT STRACK RECOMMENDS: BRICOLE — BAR HORS D’ŒUVRE

A bright, open space features dark wood panels and floor-to-ceiling windows, which — now that it’s warm — are flung wide open to provide a view over an inviting terrace. Bricole, Berlin’s first “hors d’œuvre” bar, opened in Helmholzkiez in January 2017. Its 28-year old owner, Fabian Fischer, made his foray into Berlin’s gastronomy scene at Borchardt a while back, and today works his culinary magic together with chef Steven Zeidler, of the former Restaurant Schatz, and head bartender Jan Rethemeier, of Hotel am Steinplatz. Following in the footsteps of Borchardt, Fischer focuses on French cuisine, but adapts it to the relaxed Berlin standard and mixes it with international influences. The format is hors d’œuvre — not to be confused with Spanish tapas. They are instead finely composed dishes, complete in themselves, only served in appetizer size. Think asparagus with smoked potatoes, leek puree, crème fraîche and Keta caviar, goat’s cheese wontons with fennel cream and fermented garlic, or tonka bean crème brûlée. The menu of nine to twelve plates — one third of which are vegetarian — rotates fortnightly and is supplemented by craft beer from Berlin and German wine. It’s all served up on wooden tables with fabric napkins at hand. Simple, tasteful and perfect for dinner for two or a small group of friends. Don’t forget to book on weekends.
