OKAY CAFÉ: BRINGING A TOUCH OF STOCKHOLM TO NEUKÖLLN

OKAY CAFÉ: BRINGING A TOUCH OF STOCKHOLM TO NEUKÖLLN

Whether you’re a Swede seeking a little taste of home or a Berliner simply craving a smile and something sweet — turn to Okay Café. Owner, head baker and chef, Marie-Louise (Makki) Crona has dabbled in the Berlin food scene over the past few years, with a host of projects from selling buns-by-bike, writing a food blog and hosting a series of Swedish-ish pop-ups. Now, she’s here to stay with her approachable brick-and-mortar café in Neukölln. In just over a year, Okay has become a favorite neighborhood hangout and a hub for Swedish holiday celebrations. From not too sweet cinnamon buns to avocado toast made with The Bread Station sourdough, satisfying omelets, and, on weekends, a sweet and savory assortment of tiny Swedish “plättar”, Makki’s food is as tasty to eat as it is to admire. Pair that with the friendly service and we’ve just found your new favorite café in Berlin. (Text: Devan Grimsrud / Photos: Luke Marshall Johnson)

ODE TO FRIENDSHIP: ARI BENJAMIN MEYERS AT ESTHER SCHIPPER

ODE TO FRIENDSHIP: ARI BENJAMIN MEYERS AT ESTHER SCHIPPER

At the start of this year, the violinist Ayumi Paul began writing letters to the artist and composer, Art Benjamin Meyers. Forgoing small talk in her writing, Paul instead shares intimate details from her childhood, telling of love, loss and her experiences of therapy. Meyers answered these letters in his own way, writing a score and translating Paul’s words into notes — thereby creating a sensitive portrait of his longtime friend. In Esther Schipper’s gallery you can now listen to Paul’s interpretation of Meyers’ compositions performed on the violin. Hanging on the walls are the letters, which Meyers has annotated with notes and memories. The duo’s friendship is experienced as a sound space in which music, words and objects each have their own role to play. JUDITH TAUDIEN RECOMMENDS: MASEL TOPF

JUDITH TAUDIEN RECOMMENDS: MASEL TOPF

Kollwitzkiez is a total haven for cafes, with new places popping up on a weekly basis. For restauranteurs, however, the scene can be more than a little cut-throat. One restaurant that has succeeded in establishing itself in the kiez with its special concept of innovative cuisine and cosy interiors is Masel Topf on Rykestraße. Since 2014, owner Konstantin Pinski has been serving up traditional Jewish food with a Russian influence and a modern touch. The menu prioritizes carnivores, with the classic Beef Stroganoff, Wiener Schnitzel and “Mommes Fläischroulette” (veal rolls filled with spinach, cheese and apricots) all making an appearance. Vegetarians won’t go home with a growling stomach, however, with dishes like the the falafel plate and the Wareniki. The unique, detail-oriented interior is the result of Pinski’s love for trawling through antique markets, with vintage books and opulent chairs set against patterned wallpaper decorated with framed black and white photographs. The whole experience makes you feel like you’re dining in a 1920s Russian living room. (Text: Judith Taudien / Photos: Konstantin Pinski)

LET’S POLISH! EXPLORING IDENTITY THROUGH DESIGN

LET’S POLISH! EXPLORING IDENTITY THROUGH DESIGN

What does it mean to be Polish in the world today? Explore some aesthetic suggestions tonight (13.7) at the openingof “Let’s Polish! Design from London, Paris, Vienna, Berlin and Warsaw” — an exhibition at the Polish Institute of Berlin exploring the layered question of national identity through industrial and product design. Three emerging design studios with Polish roots, scattered across Europe — from Paris and Vienna to Warsaw via Berlin — were invited to showcase designs on the topic and select another studio to do the same. Chmara.rosinke chose Kosmos Project, Maria Jeglińska suggested Krzysztof Pyda and Marta Bakowski picked Jan Hendzel. All works — from chairs to ceramics — are linked in their experimental, critical approach to representing Polish identity on an aesthetic level. So what do they reveal? You’ve got until 17 September to discover the answers for yourself. (Text: Anna Dorothea Ker / Photos: Marta Bakowski, Turczynska-for-Culture-PL)
