BARBARA – ONE OF THE BEST GERMAN MOVIES OF RECENT TIME

This is one of the best movies I’ve seen so far this year. One of the best German movies I’ve seen in a long time. “Barbara”, the latest film by Christian Petzold is built around the talent of his main actors: Nina Hoss and Ronald Zehrfeld. In the movie they both suffer from the life under suspicion and surveillance in the DDR. But in comparison to films like “The Life of Others”, this film needs no pathos to underline the fear of claustrophobia. In a way, the movie is as simple as the bike Barbara rides to and from her work in a provincial hospital and the meeting spot in the forest near the border with her West German boyfriend. Its simplicity in many aspects is the movies strength since it allows the actors to give intense performances on screen… Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the summer to come back next week so we can watch it at the open air cinema!

PUBLIC VIEWING – HOSTED BY CEE CEE AT STUDIO B

Russia versus Greece! Definitely a highlight of this year’s European Football Championship – well at least if you’re going to join our public viewing event. Studio B will turn itself into a fan base with a different host every day throughout the tournament. The Cee Cee team will be hosting there this Saturday, after Firmament (Thu 14.6.) and Neulantvanexel (Fri 15.6.), and before the Looky Looky posse (Sun 17.6.). Together with Studio B we will be offering cool drinks and a huge screen with nice company as well as a DJ set afterwards to get into the groove for Saturday night. THE PARLOUR DINNERS – PRIVATE DINING EVERY THURSDAY

As dance clubs become more and more boring, supper clubs are the new black – no doubt about that. They’re just not as reliable, as you usually have to be on their mailing list or hear about it by word of mouth. Not so at the Parlour Dinners, host and chef Laurin welcomes guests every Thursday to his apartment on Alte Schönhauser Allee for a personal treat. He’s rearranged his living room into a cosy dining joint that fits up to 30 people. For 30€ you get a three course meal that is worth much more than the price; when we were there last week he prepared a mix of green and wild asparagus with bacon and lemon zest as a starter and a pork filet in coffee-crust with laurel zucchini-gratin as a main dish – all delicious! Best seat for a romantic dinner is by the window. If you’re into it, you can go by yourself and find a seat on the big table, you will surely be walking out with new friends.

The first sun-warmed strawberries will go straight to your mouth. Even if you choose to pick only the smallest, darkest berries, your carton fills quickly. For a crop that’s so often sprayed, it’s good to know that Vierfelderhof has followed organic farming practices for the past two years and has just been certified as an organic farm. At Vierfelderhof, you pick in the midst of green fields, with hay bales and hedgerows surrounding you. The journey on the bus from Zoologischer Garten takes a little over 30 minutes but when you get off at Alt-Gatow you feel you’re in another world. The farm styles itself as a place to learn about where food comes from, and after you’ve finished picking, you can visit the farm’s heritage breeds of ducks, rabbits and chickens. Look out for the freshly laid eggs in the farm shop. The farmers predict there will be strawberries to pick until the end of June. Later in the year, you can harvest your own sunflowers and potatoes.

NEW ORDER & PETER SAVILLE – EXHIBITION, TALK & CONCERT

From next Wednesday June 21 until July 4, Electronic Beats magazne will be presenting an exhibition of New Order at .HBC. Expect a showcase of photos of the band taken through it’s history along with music videos and live recordings of their performances. Also expect Peter Saville: a legendary graphic designer who created numerous iconic record sleeves throughout his career, most notably for Joy Division and New Order. Saville as well as Bernard Sumner, a founding member of both Joy Division and New Order, will join in a discussion. So be prepared to come with a notepad full of questions and be ready for a sonic and visually inspired evening.
