BERLIN NIGHT SHIFT – A LONG NIGHT AT THE STUDIO

The idea of “The Long Night of…” is very popular in Germany, though I don’t really get the point of being pushed around in overly crowded museums within a short time. But the concept of this year’s DMY “night shift” makes sense. You get to peep into places you don’t usually get to see… like the faces of the creative folks working into the wee hours in dark rooms lit by their computer screens! Tonight 58 Berlin-based designers are opening their doors to public during the “Long Night of Design Studios”. Pay a visit to the product design studios “Supergrau” or “Weltunit“; or simply browse through the guide on Create Berlin.

PANTRY – FINE DINING HIDDEN IN MITTE

Despite its location at the end of busy Friedrichstrasse in Mitte, the newly opened restaurant “Pantry” feels covert and hidden. Entering through the bamboos and the screens, you’ll find yourself in a peaceful and cozy interior. The heavy leather seatings allow you to let go of time and space, inviting you to lean back and enjoy; an easy task if you ask me, since everything on the menu stimulates your appetite. Although this does make it difficult for you to decide what to have. I had perfectly seared scallops as a starter, entrecôte from the grill with green asparagus,red wine infused shallots plus sweet potatoe crullers for a main dish. I was perfectly satisfied afterwards but of course couldn’t resist the “Rise of Death by Chocolate” – and yes, this fondant was a dream come true!

MELODY NELSON – A BAR FOR STERLING NIGHTS

You might already know what a Julep is, but as for me – well I had to ask the bar tender at Melody Nelson to find out. Since the bar’s drink menu has an entirely dedicated section to this mint-infused drink while only one beer is offered. So no, you would not choose this charming bar to discuss the Bundesliga with your mates; you come here to enjoy good drinks at the bar and enjoy a nice conversation with your beloved. And if you’re not into Juleps you might just want to order a whisky – which I think suits this bar the best with its rugs, heavy old-school leather sofas, the dark wall and the overall genuine atmosphere. Melody Nelson, hidden in the small Novalisstrasse, is a perfect place to escape from the roughness of Berlin and the tourist traps around Oranienburger Tor to enjoy a fine night with your best friends.

VIVIANE STAPPMANNS RECOMMENDS: VENTURE TO LYCHEN

According to the old adage, a real Berliner never leaves their “Kiez”. I wonder if they know that it’s so beautiful out there that you can hardly bring yourself to return to your Kiez. Take, for instance, the Uckermark town of Lychen. Surrounded by seven lakes, a New Zealand artist and his architect wife have created the perfect country retreat, a little enclave of good taste that should fit the budget of even the least commercially successful performance artist. It took the couple a few years of painstaking work to transform the former Lychen courthouse into a beautiful Bed and Breakfast, complete with lovingly restored heirloom furniture. Combine that with the lake view, the yummy breakfast, the relaxing garden, the ready-to-use canoe and being gently woken by a cuckoo instead of squabbeling pub-crawlers, and there are very few reasons left not to get out there this summer.

HANDS ON RAINER WERNER FASSBINDER – SCREENINGS & EVENTS

The series “Hands on Rainer Werner Fassbinder” currently casts light onto the ouevre of one of Germany’s most acclaimed directors. Film magazine Revolver, Collegicum Hungaricum,Rainer Werner Fassbinder Foundation and the Zeughauskino are screeing his films and TV features along with a program with lectures and events. Tonight, in celebration of the director’s birthday (he was born on May 31st 1945 and died in 1982) you can watch “In a Year of 13 Moons” starring the German actress Eva Mattes in one of her early roles. The Fassbinder series will screen various films throughout June and will continue until November!
