MAGNIFICENT MOLLUSCS — VOLK SERVES UP SLURPABLE SEAFOOD ON BRUNNENSTRASSE

MAGNIFICENT MOLLUSCS — VOLK SERVES UP SLURPABLE SEAFOOD ON BRUNNENSTRASSE

Brunnenstraße restaurant Volk is the food version of what you might call an “artist’s artist”. The quality of the food is high, the prices are reasonable for the location, and it bears all the hallmarks of a hip restaurant: natural wine? Check. An unusual but cool interior? Check. Owner couple with a personable family story? Check. French cuisine? Seafood? Fresh oysters? Champagne? Tradition? Something with a DJ? Check, check, check, check… Opened as a tiny oyster bar back in 2019, Volk is spacious, beautiful and a little weird, with colored lights, a bar and white tablecloths. It is refreshingly unpretentious and yet very tasteful. As for the menu, it’s constantly changing, though you’ll always find the signatures of oysters and seafood. They’re fresh and big and rich and slimy and salty – just the way they should be.

It’s no surprise that the team supply other restaurants: they import their mussels and lobster directly from France using their own bus. The catch is prepared by chef Margaux Arabian and served by her partner, the entertaining host Oliver Chesler. The American made a name for himself in a previous life as a DJ and musician under the alias Horrorist, but swapped his music career for the dream he shared with his other half, who incidentally is the daughter of Michelin star chef Ghislaine Arabian. The two are the soul of the restaurant: warm, unfussy, down-to-earth and a tad eccentric. Volk is open every evening, and recently started serving brunch from 10h on weekends. You can almost always get a table in the evening – well at least until word gets out and the place gets the hype it deserves.

GO SECOND-HAND ON YOUR CYCLE — REFURBISHED EBIKES FROM UPWAY

GO SECOND-HAND ON YOUR CYCLE — REFURBISHED EBIKES FROM UPWAY

They’re becoming a must-have mode of transport, turning your work commute into a no-sweat cruise and conquering the kind of hills that leave most cyclists breathless. We are of course talking about electric bikes, which are probably the biggest thing to happen in cycling since, well, the decision to put two wheels on a metal frame. And while many of us want to jump onto the trend and give our cycling legs a lithium ion boost, there’s just one obstacle: the cost. An ebike can set you back several thousand euros, and that’s excluding insurance, accessories and maintenance. So before you head to the bike store, it might be worth looking at some of the second hand options available. It’s an approach that a startup called Upway has built an entire business model around. Founded in 2021, the French platform sells refurbished ebikes online at prices which it says are up to 60 percent less than for new models.

The website’s selection of around 1000 bikes includes brands like Cube, Giant and Cannondale and has the latest trends from the ebike market, from well-priced pragmatic rides to costlier-but-cool models with premium designs. You’ll find daily workhorse commuters as well as high-end tourers that make cycling holidays in the Alps a genuinely realistic prospect. The platform is a kind of go-between: once someone registers their bike for sale, Upway picks it up and does a check of all the components (including, crucially, the battery), repairing and replacing parts as needed before listing it on the website. The bikes come with a one-year warranty, meaning you can hop on your new ride knowing it’s safe and ready for your next adventure, whether that be Moabit to Mitte or Martigny to Mont Blanc…

BUNDESPLATZ KINO SHOWS ARTY FLICKS OUT WEST — FILMS FROM BERLINALE GOES KIEZ

BUNDESPLATZ KINO SHOWS ARTY FLICKS OUT WEST — FILMS FROM BERLINALE GOES KIEZ

There’s lots of new stuff happening out West – and some classical stuff, too! This month the Berlinale (16–26.02.2023) is lighting up silver screens across the city for the 73rd time – and with it, a cinematic institution in Wilmersdorf: Bundesplatz-Kino. The cinema has been screening films for over 100 years and is one of seven movie theaters participating in the festival’s Berlinale Goes Kiez program (18–24.02), which even includes events at Plötzensee Prison. Back to Wilmersdorf, though: for more than ten years, the owners of Bundesplatz-Kino, Peter Latta and Martin Erlenmaier, have dedicated themselves to arthouse films with a focus on female directors who have shaped the German film landscape since the 1970s. Erlenmaier calls it “communicative cinema” that encourages audiences to engage in conversation and exchange ideas with filmmakers after screenings. So stop by as part of the Berlinale Goes Kiez or whenever you’re out West. The ambience in the auditorium and cafe alone is worth a visit. Speaking of iconic screens: got any photos of movie theaters around the world that closed during lockdown? If so, they’ll be very welcome on the Sleeping Screens blog run by Simon Dickel and Martin Erlenmaier.

FROM A COWBOY SALOON TO A CUSTOM SHOE SHOP FOR MEN AND WOMEN — KORBINIAN LUDWIG HESS

FROM A COWBOY SALOON TO A CUSTOM SHOE SHOP FOR MEN AND WOMEN — KORBINIAN LUDWIG HESS

“Show me your shoes and I’ll tell you who you are” goes the German saying. It might not roll off the tongue, but it does hold true: your shoe choice can reveal more about you than you think. And what you put on your feet can certainly save a mediocre outfit. It’s something they know all about at Korbinian Ludwig Heß, a shoemaker on Hohenzollernplatz that’s one of the best-known addresses for custom-made shoes. Founder Korbinian’s journey took him from his hometown of Munich via four different study courses to Berlin, where his penchant for the Wild West led him to the unusual idea of opening a cowboy saloon. Complete with swinging doors and a long bar, it would be just like you see in the movies. His other idea – selling hats and cowboy boots – led Korbinian to google “best shoemakers in the world” which landed him an apprenticeship with renowned shoemaker Rudolf Scheer in Vienna. In the end, Korbinian opened his shoe store and workshop for custom-made men’s and women’s shoes in April 2017. Everything here is made by hand – even the glue is specially prepared. Being custom-made, the shoes are an expression of the personality of each customer: each is adjusted to the wearer’s needs with great precision to guarantee the perfect fit. If the production time of six to eight months is too long for you, you can take part in the first 12-day shoemaking course at KLH this year to learn to make your own shoes, too.

DESERT RETREATS AND KREUZKÖLLN WORKSHOPS — ESCAPE AND LEARN WITH KAILO NATURE THERAPY

DESERT RETREATS AND KREUZKÖLLN WORKSHOPS — ESCAPE AND LEARN WITH KAILO NATURE THERAPY

As much as we love Berlin and the hustle and bustle of the big city, every now and then we need some time out – whether that’s out in the wide world or right here in town. Olivia, founder of Kailo Nature Therapy and certified asystemic nature therapist, offers just that. Her retreats and workshops take place all over. If you’re in the mood for a change of perspective and temperature, then perhaps a little time out between desert and sea in Egypt is in order. Journey to Yourself (15–22.03.2023) is a retreat that will offer you space to connect with your outer nature – your body – as well as your inner nature. Working with fellow attendees but also individually, you will dive into themes that have been present in your life, consciously or unconsciously, for a long time. Besides this, the trip offers the opportunity to simply get away from the stresses of everyday life for a few days. Together you will spend two nights in the desert and four more in a private villa with a pool where you participate in daily sessions from meditation and breathwork to a practice known as Systemic Constellations. Snorkelling in the ocean, dancing in nature and cooking together are also part of the program, as is 1:1 guidance.

If Egypt is too far for you, Olivia also offers online, indoor and outdoor workshops in Berlin. From a Kreuzköllner loft she helps you explore earth, water, air and fire around and within you at the 4 Elements Research Club. Various workshops offer activities around art, music or handicrafts (for example working with clay). No matter how and where, escaping the stress of everyday life in the city for a while and connecting with nature is always a good thing, a view Olivia shares.. Now based in Berlin, she grew up in a small town surrounded by forests, fields and meadows and so understands the positive effect of nature on our wellbeing. Today, Olivia offers a wide range of services around the subject – from events and retreats to 1:1 coaching and team development courses. Whether you see these offerings as a kind of therapy, coaching or spiritual journey is up to you – one thing you won’t find at these retreats is categorization.
