ECLECTIC ENGINEERING — A PODCAST FOR CONVERSATIONS ABOUT PHILOSOPHY, ART AND MORE

ECLECTIC ENGINEERING — A PODCAST FOR CONVERSATIONS ABOUT PHILOSOPHY, ART AND MORE

Two academics begin a collaboration that turns out to be more fruitful and rewarding than almost any other in their field – but it’s a partnership that attracts jealousy. This scenario doesn’t take place in an open-plan office, but among three 20th century philosophers. The story is spotlighted in the latest episode of the Eclectic Engineering podcast. In it, artist and theorist Marie von Heyl examines philosopher Alain Badiou’s relationship with Gilles Deleuze and the jealousy Félix Guattari has towards this undeniably special collaboration. Eclectic Engineering manages to let the themes of philosophy, art, feminism and psychoanalysis come together in an intuitive way. The show is neither an exclusive medium for initiated experts nor a beginners guide. Marie von Heyl places the conversation, and the potential for collaboration, in the foreground. In doing so, she prompts questions that can only arise when the answers are not already predefined.

If you listen carefully, you feel how these themes and questions – which so far have been discussed with more than 20 people – unfold at their own pace, run their course and reunite. If you’re curious about jealousy and lust in philosophy or just want to see where these conversations carry you, give Eclectic Engineering a listen. It’s available wherever you get your podcasts.

ELEGANT EVENT DESIGN AND FINE FLORALS BY WISHBONE STUDIO

ELEGANT EVENT DESIGN AND FINE FLORALS BY WISHBONE STUDIO

Walking into Wishbone Studio feels like the spark of luck you feel when you snap off the bigger half of the bone. Started six years ago, Wishbone’s Neukölln studio opened in February 2021 and is as colorful and inviting as she is. What started as a creative outlet is now a fully fledged studio where Margaret and her team conceptualize and build events. From serviettes naturally dyed with turmeric to floral installations draped from ceilings, or the anthuriums threaded with string she designed for our latest Cee Cee dinner, Margaret and her team’s approach is playful and unique to each event.

Inside the studio are boxes of beads and pearls on a huge table, arranged experiments sitting on plinths, cut stems askew the floor. A fire warms the room. Green satin curtains hide shelves full of treasures – Margaret talks us through the vases and trinkets she’s collected through her many collaborations and clients. It’s clear that community is a value of hers – from the way she lists the names of the ceramicists she loves to the Babes Brunches she runs. Her experience is extensive: Proofxyz, Sonos and Berlin Photo Week are among her clients. If you are planning an event and want to draw on this experience, you can get in touch with Margaret by email. Or, if you just want to get your hands on the flowers, this Valentine’s Day (14.02.2023) Wishbone are taking to the street with a cart called “Forget Me Not” from which they’ll sell single stems that have been adorned with ribbons and pearls and thoughtfully wrapped. They will do a small tour from Alexanderplatz through Hackescher Markt and ending at Château Royal alongside their Valentine’s Day Special. If you don’t have the chance to catch them on-the-go, you can stop by Treat in Schillerkiez where they’ll have stems for sale as well.

SWAP YOUR SCREEN FOR AN ANALOG ADVENTURE — POSTER PRINTING AT ERIK SPIEKERMANN’S LETTERPRESS WORKSHOP

SWAP YOUR SCREEN FOR AN ANALOG ADVENTURE — POSTER PRINTING AT ERIK SPIEKERMANN’S LETTERPRESS WORKSHOP

Workshop, gallery, workshop, co-working space, collection – p98a is all that and more. Founded in 2013 by Erik Spiekermann – a legend in typeface design circles – the space is tucked away in a backyard where you’re greeted with fountains and murals. It’s one of those small, unexpected corners on Potsdamer Strasse that take you back to the days when artists, writers and intellectuals would spend their evenings together there. Today, Potsdamer Straße is a colorful mix, and this is reflected at No. 98. Here you’ll find Erik’s “private” collection of letterpresses – type cases filled with lead and wooden letters and printing presses collected over the decades. The room has a bright ambience that gives the collection the presence it deserves, even today. It’s not just letters that have accumulated here; the studio is also known for exciting discussions, interesting encounters and friendships. Lilith, Helene and Lennart now work here alongside Erik, giving workshops to introduce you to letterpress printing.

Lilith leads you through the rooms, explaining how the first books were produced en masse and where terms like “kerning” and “spacing” come from. In the narrow, long hallway you find large wooden letters which, when seen alone, have a special quality. After the studio tour (and an espresso), you move on to the presses, where you can print your own poster. You also make fun discoveries, like how the “Better Done Than Perfct” poster actually didn’t turn out so perfect. But that’s exactly why printing here is always exciting: each poster has a unique character due to the scratches and dents that have developed on the letters over the centuries. How you roll and apply ink to the plates, what kind of paper you print on, and how you handle the printing press all come into play. You learn all this during the workshop and by the end you will have printed a near-perfect poster. Whether it’s a studio tour, a workshop in a small group or a team-building event – at p98a print enthusiasts can find a second home and enjoy the absence of computer screens, at least for a short moment.

WOODLAND WINTER HIKE — A LAKESIDE TRIP AROUND STORKOWER SEE TO WENDISCH RIETZ

WOODLAND WINTER HIKE — A LAKESIDE TRIP AROUND STORKOWER SEE TO WENDISCH RIETZ

The lakeside path around the Storkower See lake is a wonderful destination, particularly during the cold winter months. The lake is easy to reach by public transportation, is known for its excellent air quality and has dense forests all around. The hike starts in Storkow. From Reichenwalder Straße, leave the town by heading east. Behind the “Alter Weinberg” pub, follow the Knüppeldamm in the direction of the lake and hike along the eastern shore via Wolfswinkel towards Dahmsdorf. A detour to the old church and the rest area at the beach is worthwhile. On nice winter days, the sun shines impressively over the western shore. It’s quite a special atmosphere. The route continues directly along the lake to the south towards Wendisch Rietz, where you can eat, linger at the harbor or go to the sauna. For the more ambitious, it’s worth taking a detour to the nature trail at Scharmützelsee, where you can enjoy the sunset. The route is 15km long and can be completed in three to four hours. All in all, it’s an easy hike on comfortable lakeside and forest paths. From the train station at Wendisch Rietz, a regional express will bring you back home to the city.

FLOWERS, DINNER DATES AND CONFETTI CAKE FOR TWO — MARSANO CELEBRATES V-DAY

FLOWERS, DINNER DATES AND CONFETTI CAKE FOR TWO — MARSANO CELEBRATES V-DAY

Whether you have a date or not, Valentine’s Day is all about spreading the love. For floral gifts sure to bring joy to your favorite person (or yourself, we don’t judge), Marsano has tasteful bouquets aplenty. The Mitte florist has created a collection specific to V-Day that includes all sorts of thoughtful indulgences. There’s the Queen of Hearts bouquet, which has all the colors needed to brighten up winter, or the Honey arrangement with cymbidiums, tulips and mimosa for yellow-hued spring vibes. You can match the flowers with a cute bottle of organic wine for a cozy night in or add a chic vase if your beloved doesn’t have much by way of glassware. Then there’s the edible treats: how about some Valentine’s greeting cookies? Or the fun multicolored Confetti Cake? Because nothing says I love you like a 15 cm vanilla sponge filled with strawberry puree…

P.S. As a celebration of both coupledom and single life, Marsano are hosting two dinners – one for singles on 13.02 and one for couples on 14.02 – to mark the launch of their Fingerlickin catering service. Expect Persian food, champagne and – of course – flowers.
