CAROLINE GRINSTED RECOMMENDS: WELT DER WEINE

CAROLINE GRINSTED RECOMMENDS: WELT DER WEINE

A sleepy street in Kollwitzviertel is home to one of the most extensive wine merchants in Berlin. Reinhard Schuberth owns the Berliner Weinagentur and his tiny shop, Welt der Weine, houses a quite astonishing selection inside. Schuberth grew up in the GDR, and after the wall came down, he seized the opportunity to travel. After falling in love with France and French wine, he decided to share his newfound passion with Berlin, his native city. Welt der Weine currently has a catalogue with over 5000 wines available for order. Italian, Spanish and new world wines are included, but of course the real focus is on French and German wines. My favorites are “Mlle de T”, a french Pouilly-Fumé and “Auro Rousso Côtes de Ventoux Les Terrasses d’Éole”, a great-value red wine. But if those are not to your taste or budget, Reinhard and his friendly staff are happy to advise, whether you’re after a table wine for everyday drinking, or splashing out on a bottle for a special occasion.
