SOUND BATH SPACE BLENDING MUSIC, MOVEMENT AND MEDITATION — INNER SOUND

SOUND BATH SPACE BLENDING MUSIC, MOVEMENT AND MEDITATION — INNER SOUND

As you lie in a state somewhere between wakefulness and sleep, you feel your breathing relax as the tones of Tingsha cymbals and Koshi chimes appear in your auditory field. There’s absolutely nothing to do but surrender to the experience. This dreamy, floaty atmosphere is what typically awaits you at one of the sessions at Inner Sound, a space for sound baths, sound yoga – sound everything – that opened in Kreuzberg in November 2024. The studio is an offshoot of Har Studio on Urbanstraße, a space for creativity, focussing on Sound Healing, Yoga, Experiences and Pilates, and was started by Har founder Eugenia Har and Yasemin Vollmond from Vollmondyoga. It’s a place for all sorts of practices, from simple gong baths to different combinations of movement, breathwork, music, yoga and dance. Classes include the likes of “Quantum Meditation + Projections with Flor” and “Sunday Natural Crystal Bowls Bath with Yasemin” and there is a regular program of live acoustic and electronic concerts (“Voice Activation with Kimi“, where you are invited to sing with the group). Sessions and concerts aside, the interior of the 252 sqm loft space – located on the fifth floor of an Altbau – is itself a soothing place to be. The minimalist, downlit interior by Benjamin Brenner is all sheer curtains and soft diffused lighting and is so atmospheric in the evening. Step in on a dark grey night and you’ll immediately feel your heart rate fall – and that’s before a single gong is rung…

ICE SKATING, CURLING AND PACKING YOUR SWIMMING TRUNKS — OUR TIPS FOR YOUR WINTER WEEKEND

ICE SKATING, CURLING AND PACKING YOUR SWIMMING TRUNKS — OUR TIPS FOR YOUR WINTER WEEKEND

If your feet are frosty, put them in a pair of skates and get out on the ice. Until the end of the year, skate on Glice‘s ecological rinks in front of the Dieselhaus restaurant, or shoot your ice stock on the smooth surface and compete against your friends or colleagues. If you fancy a warm drink after your duel on the ice, mulled wine and hearty food await you in the wintery “Forum an der Museumsinsel“. Another sustainable option to embrace winter in a sporty way is curling at the Café am Neuen See. In addition to the atmospheric winter market, which invites you to enjoy homemade cookies and Christmas music before or after a game, try your hand at the Scandinavian precision sport on six covered real ice rinks. It’s not just Neukölln residents who have been eagerly awaiting this reopening: the ice stadium in the Werner-Seelenbinder-Sportpark has finally reopened after two years of renovation. If you want to pirouette to the beat, keep an upcoming Saturday free for the ice disco at Zenner Biergarten, or come every Saturday. The events are curated weekly by various collectives, magazines and brands such as Mit VergnügenMotif Wein and Gloria Viagra. The highlight is the selected line-ups from the best Berlin DJs. As always, skates are available on-site, but tickets must be booked in advance. If you want to get up close and personal with the cold, join the Icedippers, who gather every Saturday morning at three (different) Berlin lakes for a collective cold kick (see also our article from 2023 here). The group of professional and amateur ice swimmers gather at Plötzensee, Alt-Stralau and Schlachtensee and warmly welcome anyone who wants to pack their swimming trunks and take the plunge into the cold water.

The seasonal Winterlights exhibition at Dark Matter creates the greatest possible distance from the ice and cold. Although it is open air, the installation of fir trees and light columns forms an atmospheric dome that seems to protect you from the cold and darkness. The collaboration between artist Christopher Bauder and composer Chris Kuijten transforms the outdoor area on Köpenicker Chaussee into a modern winter wonderland, in which the traditional Christmas tree is rotated 180 degrees and illuminated. So get on the ice or under the tree!

MERRY MADLITZ — PUNCH AND CHRISTMAS TREES AT GUT&BÖSEL

MERRY MADLITZ — PUNCH AND CHRISTMAS TREES AT GUT&BÖSEL

“Between forestry and research, cows and compost, agroforestry and arable farming — this is how we research and develop various forms of multifunctional land use,” is how the Gut&Bösel farm introduces itself. Benedikt, who left his career as an investment banker in 2016 to devote himself to the family business and sustainable farming, has achieved pop status with his farm. It feels like everyone has heard of it, be it through the successful 2023 book “Rebels of the Earth” or the docuseries “Farm Rebellion”, released in the same year. If you want to get to know the Madlitz estate in person, visit the Christmas farm market and sustainable Christmas tree felling on the third Advent (14 & 15.12.2024). What exactly is behind the concept of sustainable Christmas trees? It’s simple: the trees are felled from a height of 1.80 meters. This means the mother trunk is not damaged and can grow back. The process can be repeated after seven years. In addition, they work without harmful soil cultivation or synthetic fertilizers. What else awaits you at Gut&Bösel? Campfire and stick bread for the little visitors, apple punch from their harvest, and mulled wine. The farm kitchen serves homemade mushroom or beef goulash, and the organic neighboring farm Ackerpulco offers local vegetables, but also meat, home-distilled spirits and leather goods from Gut&Bösel. In other words, you can do your Christmas dinner shopping in one spot. In addition to cattle, Gut&Bösel also grows grain — you can purchase freshly baked bread at the farm. The Christmas market is just under an hour from Berlin and the trip is worthwhile because sustainable, multifunctional agriculture affects us all in times of climate change and should not only be understood but experienced. Benedikt and his team understand this, which is why they keep their doors open.

THE ART OF MASSAGE AND STRETCH — RELAX AND RECOVER AT THE NEW SOULHOUSE BERLIN MITTE

THE ART OF MASSAGE AND STRETCH — RELAX AND RECOVER AT THE NEW SOULHOUSE BERLIN MITTE

We all know that exercise is a good way to look after our bodies, but what about recovery? If you are looking for some “yin” selfcare to offset all those “yang” workouts, then massage and bodywork might be a worthwhile addition to your routine. The latest go-to place for this is Soulhouse Berlin Mitte. The studio – one of five locations in Berlin and Hamburg – offers a mix of massage and selfcare practices in minimalist “Wabi-Sabi” style treatment rooms by employed Soulhouse Experts. You can pick from ten different treatments, including pregnancy massages and foot reflexology. If you want to relax completely after a long week, you should opt for a Soulhouse Signature Classic, which is performed on a heated lounger. But perhaps most interesting is a relatively recent trend called assisted stretching. Known from the USA, Soulhouse is the first to bring 1:1 assisted stretching units to Germany. The Soulhouse Stretch combines the best of yoga, mobility and recovery training. Personalized stretches tailored to you are performed by the Soulhouse Stretch Experts – for more flexibility and a completely new body feeling. The idea behind it: Your body gains new freedom of movement as a second person playfully guides you into deep stretches. One session should immediately feel like several weeks of training. Whether you are an athlete or simply long for a better body feeling – Assisted Stretch helps you to get your body in top shape. Want to move like you used to? Stretch with Soulhouse.

THE POWER OF WEIGHTLESSNESS: DISCOVER AER STRETCHING FOR YOUR BODY AND MIND — RECOMMENDED BY VERENA SCHWARZ

THE POWER OF WEIGHTLESSNESS: DISCOVER AER STRETCHING FOR YOUR BODY AND MIND — RECOMMENDED BY VERENA SCHWARZ

After a yoga warm-up and guided breathwork, I take off, secured with cuffs on my wrists and ankles, and float above the mat (held by a monumental wooden beam construction). Wooden rods in my hands give my mind the impression of stability. Slowly I turn, tighten my arms and legs and release. Sometimes I feel the full weight of my body, sometimes I actively work against it. The benefits of the Aer Method are many and varied: mobilization, relaxation, strengthening, regeneration, stress reduction and pain relief… to name just a few. The basis of Aer Stretching is Pravilo, an ancient Slavic movement practice. The origin of the word “pravit” means to straighten something, and pravilo is indeed intended to align the body through gravity and stretching. Mother and son duo Tamara Shengeliya and Alexander Kromm brought the concept from Tbilisi, Georgia to Berlin, adding the latest scientific findings. Training at Aer is always 1:1 according to an individualized plan, led by specialized trainers, ideally once or twice a week. In keeping with the holistic approach practiced and taught here, you can attend grounding yoga classes with master instructor Alex Williams, which combine breathing exercises and deep relaxation. After my session, I feel relaxed, blockages have been released. I leave the studio feeling a little bit lighter.

For Verena Schwarz, movement is both passion and profession. As a certified Pilates instructor, she guides students through the strengthening and mobilizing practice. She incorporates influences from related disciplines into her classes to ensure movement is purposeful, but also fun and engaging. Verena currently teaches mainly at yogafürdich.
