NATURE, PLANTS, COLORS — DISCOVER BERLIN’S GREEN SIDE WITH WALKS & WORKSHOPS BY STILL GARMENTS

NATURE, PLANTS, COLORS — DISCOVER BERLIN’S GREEN SIDE WITH WALKS & WORKSHOPS BY STILL GARMENTS

Many of us have spent the past year discovering just how beautiful Berlin can be away from the busy streets and filled venues. Indeed, they say walking has become the new national sport. So what better time to get more acquainted with the capital’s diverse flora for your next nature trip? At hand is Elke Fiebig, who is always glad to show you the ins and outs of plants. A fashion design graduate, she began dyeing fabrics with natural colors before starting Still garments when her passion for nature became a profession. Now a trained plant educator, she gives guided walks through the picturesque Botanical Volkspark in Pankow letting you discover wild plants and flowers and how you can use them for dyeing. Did you know, for example, that many local medicinal plants such as yarrow and St. John’s Wort produce light yellow shades when you dye fabrics with them?

The possibilities are many: the tanin-rich leaves of oak for instance can produce gray and black tones without the use of synthetic dyes. As part of your tour you also learn the bouquet rule, meaning you can only take a handful of the respective plant at a time so that it can regenerate, leaving enough for both the animal world and other foragers. If you are already acquainted with plant-based dyes, you can put this knowledge to the test at one of Elke’s workshops, the next of which will take place at Mayda Blumenfarm on 15.08.2021. Here you can discover bundle dyeing, an easy-to-learn technique for creating colorful patterns. You will go home with a freshly dyed scarf and some new nature knowledge. The perfect way to give the living world some much-needed appreciation? We think so!

WILDE HEIMAT — TREE-LINED CAMPSITE IN THE UCKERMARK FOR RIVER SWIMMING, BARBECUES AND NIGHTS BY THE CAMPFIRE

WILDE HEIMAT — TREE-LINED CAMPSITE IN THE UCKERMARK FOR RIVER SWIMMING, BARBECUES AND NIGHTS BY THE CAMPFIRE

Travelling to a campsite is always a mix of excitement and anxiety. Will it look as nice as the website? Will there be enough space? Will the other campers be friendly? But when you arrive at Wilde Heimat in the Uckermark, any doubts you have disappear. Set amongst pine forests on the banks of the Havel river, this idyllic campsite does things very differently. Instead of metal fences and concrete parking spaces, you are met with meadows, wooden huts and endless trees. The people are equally welcoming, not least owners Kristin and Martin who have created a place that’s far more than just a functional place to sleep. You feel an almost festival-like sense of community amongst your fellow campers: there are nighttime guitar sessions in the covered campfire huts, natural playgrounds where children can make friends and a charming outdoor kitchen with a barbecue that moves on rails. Those looking for some quiet time won’t be disappointed: you can happily stay by your tent or camper van, for which there seems to be endless amounts of grassy space.

Located on the outskirts of “Wasserstadt” Fürstenberg 90km north of Berlin, the site is a great base to explore the Uckermark region, though there’s plenty to do locally: swimming or canoeing in the fish-filled Havel, cycling, walking, table tennis, archery… the list goes on. All the gear you need can be rented onsite, and Kristin and Martin will even lend you a pizza oven if you get tired of barbecuing. In keeping with the wild camping theme, sanitary facilities are basic but clean and have plentiful hot water, though you might not even need it after a dip in the crystal clear waters at the river bathing spot. At the end of your nature-packed day, you walk back to your tent amongst the stars, campfires and distant guitars, and wonder if you’ll ever bring yourself to leave…

ASANAS AND BEATS — TECHNO YOGA AT HASENHEIDE WITH HI YOGA & SEBASTIAAN

ASANAS AND BEATS — TECHNO YOGA AT HASENHEIDE WITH HI YOGA & SEBASTIAAN

Hasenheide park has been throbbing with dance music all summer, but it’s not just the illegal raves: the yogis are also moving to the beat at the techno yoga classes from Hi Yoga. Founded in 2018, the Kreuzberg-based yoga studio has moved outdoors to take you on a hour-long journey of music and motion. The studio offers eight weekly classes in the Neukölln park, led by a team that includes founder Sophie Senoner as well as music producer Sebastiaan Brinkman, who we joined for a Saturday evening class. Dividing his life between teaching asanas and making electronic beats, Sebastiaan blends an easy-going, energetic yoga flow with his own music mixes that are perfectly matched to the pace of the class.

You get to see Hasenheide from a whole different perspective as you bend, dive and balance amongst the tweeting birds and passing cyclists. The class finishes up with an extra-long Shavasana in the early-evening light as Sebastiaan reads out soothing stories. Besides Hasenheide, Hi Yoga also runs outdoor techno classes at Lessinghöhe in Neukölln and at Volkspark Rehberge in Wedding, and you can also join Sebastiaan at Hasenheide for the cosmic vinyasa classes he gives with Vollmond Yoga. The early-bird session at 8h30 on Tuesdays is perfect for working off that morning stiffness so you can start the day with some of your best (yoga) moves.

A DESIGN DESTINATION ON THE BALTIC COAST — PANORAMAHAUS USEDOM FOR A STYLISH BEACH GETAWAY

A DESIGN DESTINATION ON THE BALTIC COAST — PANORAMAHAUS USEDOM FOR A STYLISH BEACH GETAWAY

As soon as you arrive at Panoramahaus Usedom you’ll want to run around and check out every single tastefully-decorated room. This Baltic Sea holiday home is a modern, timber-clad construction that captivates with its bright colors, well-picked furniture and artworks including from Berlin-based Jorinde Voigt. Opened by owner and host Daniel Wolter in September 2020, the property has clean, Nordic styling developed by creative agency Salty Interiors and includes twin terraces and a beautiful sauna. The open-plan kitchen and living space has floor-to-ceiling windows offering seamless access to the garden for easy cooking, eating, barbecuing and sunbathing. As for the beds, you almost feel like you’re floating as you spread out under the covers with the crowing of seagulls in the distance.

Of course, a trip to the coast isn’t complete without some time at the beach, which you can reach either via the small village of Zinnowitz or through the forest path amongst shady trees and pine smells. As you emerge onto the sand, the infinity of the sea views hits you. Settle down in one of the classic beach chairs or put your towel down in the shade and listen to the sound of the Baltic. If you want to venture further, take the car or a bike and visit Usedom’s cheese dairy or go and watch the surfers on the Achterwasser bay from Café Knatter. We visited the house this summer and are already looking forward to returning in winter so we can make the most of the open fireplace that takes pride of place in the living room. A turntable and flatscreen TV offer entertainment for rainy days, while internet is available for working holidays. The well-equipped kitchen suffices for even the keenest of cooks and comes complete with an honesty-box wine selection. Enjoying food and drink with good friends while watching the evening sky through the panoramic windows – what could be better?
