INTO THE WOODS — ON THE TRAIL OF MUSHROOMS IN THE MIDDLE OF BERLIN’S FORESTS

INTO THE WOODS — ON THE TRAIL OF MUSHROOMS IN THE MIDDLE OF BERLIN’S FORESTS

At the end of September 2023 we were able to accompany Moritz from “Into the Woods” on one of his mushroom collecting workshops southeast of Berlin. The location was communicated to us only a few days before the workshop. We had high expectations – and the excitement and anticipation were even higher. You won’t read anything here about richly laden baskets full of chestnuts, porcini, red caps or chanterelles – because the light autumn rain in the last few days has done quite little for the forest floor after 6 weeks of drought and summer heat. As contradictory as it may sound, that is not what this mushroom workshop is mainly about. Moritz worked successfully in commercial photography until a few years ago, before he made the decision to devote himself entirely to his passion – the forest and its creatures, and especially the world of mushrooms. And he wants to share this knowledge with everyone in his workshops. How can you identify mushrooms by the trees or soil conditions under which they grow? How do fungal spores behave and what exactly is a mycelium? In turn, what does this have to do with the Tokyo subway system? Moritz’s wealth of knowledge seems to be immeasurable and so he has an exciting anecdote to tell about every find, whether inedible or edible mushroom.

In addition to a mushroom basket and a knife, you will need a lot of patience and calm. With awareness exercises we left the daily routine behind us together with Moritz and discovered the silence and beauty of the forest. By the way, Moritz is not only a professional mushroom picker, but also a professional forest bather, called “Shinrin Yoku” – he also offers regular workshops for forest bathing. After a few hours in the forest, stocked with a variety of mushrooms, a delicious curly hen, colorful leaves, special lichens and berries, Moritz invited us to enjoy homemade onion tart, hawk mushroom, sourdough bread with porcini butter and coffee on his garden terrace. To conclude our workshop, we spread out our collected treasures on a large cardboard – Moritz snapped a photo as a souvenir. Whether it’s a mushroom picking workshop, forest bathing or retreat in Brandenburg, Moritz’s passion not only makes the activities fun, but you’ll also go home with plenty of new knowledge!

SELF-SERVICE KAYAKS: THE KAYAKOMAT OFFERS 24/7 SIT-ON-TOP BOATS

SELF-SERVICE KAYAKS: THE KAYAKOMAT OFFERS 24/7 SIT-ON-TOP BOATS

If you want to paddle towards the sunset: off to Eichwalde! The Kayakomat offers you boats to rent 24/7. The concept comes from Sweden, where there are many lakes, and has slowly spread to Germany. I discovered the first one in beautiful Stralsund, but there are already two in Berlin. There’s one in Köpenick, but I tested the one in Eichwalde – right on the Berlin-Brandenburg border. Here, at a nice swimming spot on the Dahme, you can rent a bright red solo or tandem kayak. You book the whole thing using a smartphone and PIN code. Simply enter the code into the combination lock and take out the boat. Put the paddles together and off you go. Life jackets are also on board, of course. The kayaks here in Eichwalde are so-called sit-on-top kayaks, which are super comfortable, especially in warm temperatures. From the location in Eichwalde, if you have a whole day to spend on the water, you can go on real excursions and paddle into the next lake or do a small round trip to Lake Crossin and back via the canal. But if you are doing it for the first time, I recommend two to three hours. That’s enough to paddle around the small island and to cruise a bit along the green shores. There’s plenty to see. Tip: the boats are not exactly lightweight: so be prepared for a bit of a tow to the shore, but it’s not far. But they are easy to drive and steer and you feel super safe on them! Tip: it’s best to reserve your boat from home, because it takes a moment to get the PIN code to unlock it. So no more excuses: get on the water!

ZUSAMMENZIMMERN — THE FESTIVAL FOR CULTURE & SPACE

ZUSAMMENZIMMERN — THE FESTIVAL FOR CULTURE & SPACE

Hohenschönhausen has a special place in my heart. When we moved to Berlin in 1992, we lived on the same block as the charming high-rise building across from the famous Sportforum sports complex. And this is where it all began: swimming at the Orankesee, my high school graduation at the Gutenberg Oberschule, and most of all my love for architecture and Berlin city life. But back to Hohenschönhausen: the Berlin borough with a lot of undiscovered potential is finally coming into the spotlight. Here, old villas stand next to prefabricated “Plattenbauten”, industrial sites meet protected landscape areas – this “wild mix” and high-contrast juxtaposition creates a world of opportunity. The experts from the Stiftung Stadtkultur, the urban mediator Lukas Staudinger from Poligonal Berlin and the Hamburg-based architects from Projektbüro have also noticed this potential. The idea of a joint cause grew into a three-day event called ZusammenZimmern.Festival featuring performances, workshops, concerts and great food!

“Zimmer für dich” (Room for you) is the festival hub, a mobile structure designed by the architecture firm Projektbüro – designed as a space for experimentation, bringing people together, and everyday life. Projektbüro built the temporary wooden structure, which stood on Wartenberg Kirchplatz all summer and now will be the center of the festival weekend. The “Zimmer für dich” can be used by anyone who wants more space: for meeting, working, playing, reading or resting. Its use will be showcased as part of an exhibition with installations by Guerilla Architects and Alina Mann on and in the surrounding buildings; pole performance by the artist, DJane and dancer FRZNTE – here the architectural backdrop serves as both inspiration and stage. Berlin rapper Ebow, one of the exciting figures of post-migrant and queer rap, will kick off the event. In addition to FRZNTE, who grew up in Lichtenberg, a whole series of artists have their roots in the east of Berlin. These include the trap duo Ostberlin Androgyn, who spent their childhood on Prerower Platz in Hohenschönhausen, and the author Ahne, who will read from his autobiographical novel “Wie ich einmal lebte” (“How I Once Lived”) about his childhood and youth in the GDR. Also represented is the Hanoi Ensemble of the Lichtenberg Shostakovich Music School, which plays classical and popular Vietnamese music. Miranda Rigby and Paula Erstmann from the Stadtküche will take care of the culinary exploration of the city. Little ones are also welcome: the Cabuwazi children’s circus will be providing a cheerful program. So, let’s go to Hohenschönhausen!

VON HAND — SUSTAINABLE FLOWERS & SEASONAL VEGETABLES FROM THE SOURCE, TO THE MARKET AND INTO THE MOUTH

VON HAND — SUSTAINABLE FLOWERS & SEASONAL VEGETABLES FROM THE SOURCE, TO THE MARKET AND INTO THE MOUTH

It’s finally Saturday and the way leads to Zehlendorf – directly to the flower stand of Sonja and Jim Reifferscheid, the creators of Von Hand. Here you can find everything your heart desires: flowers, herbs and grasses, perennials and annual cut flowers. There is not a week in the year in which not even a branch makes it into one of my vases – preferably an indication of each season and from the region. The month of August is at its best and the flower stand is a splendor of vibrant pink and yellow. Countless containers full of dahlias, roses, ox-eyes, zinnias, snapdragons, as well as burnets, thyme and fragrant phlox – a sea of cut flowers from the countryside. The neighborhood knows Sonja and Jim’s flower stand, and it’s not long before one bouquet after another leaves. The last of the fiery dahlias are gone – I have to hurry with my selection!

Back to Sonja and Jim: she is a cultural manager, he – a landscape architect. Both were drawn out into the countryside – away from the noise of the city and working on the computer every day. After taking over a former farm in Werder an der Havel, they founded their business Von Hand. On their 1.5 acre field they grow not only flowers, but also fruits and vegetables – following the ideals and approaches of permaculture, No-Dig methods and other ecological principles. They sow, harvest and process their plants and do so without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides and are part of the Slowflower movement. Their awareness of handwork and seasonality is what sets them apart. In the future they want to deepen and teach this through workshops about food, agriculture, handicrafts and sustainable floristry. A taster and daily companion is their vegetable box – full of seasonal varieties and also regional and gorgeous, like the flower selection at the stand in Zehlendorf.
