YOUR NEW PLUSH & PLAYFUL COCKTAIL GO-TO: MR. SUSAN

YOUR NEW PLUSH & PLAYFUL COCKTAIL GO-TO: MR. SUSAN

As you step through the doorway of Mr. Susan, matte teal and navy walls accented by rays of light and plush, velvet-draped bar stools invite you to take a seat at pink terrazzo tabletops. Taking their name from the beloved Korean-German street food vendor of Markthalle Neun fame, Susan Choi, Damien Guichard, and Shawn Beck are now presenting eclectic flavor pairings in playful ways at their cocktail bar, opened in July 2018. Since then, we’ve slowly been drinking our way through their menu, from their savory “Micheladas” featuring spicy kimchi popsicles to dip in beer to their subtly sweet strawberry cocktail served in a glass rimmed with dehydrated strawberries, and of course their on-rotation “frozen goodness” — which may or may not be that glass of frozé you’ve been craving this summer. Come fall, there are plenty more treats on the horizon — think bar bites and a spirited (literally and figuratively) new seasonal drinks menu. (Text: Devan Grimsrud / Photos: Luke Marshall Johnson)

CAPPERI: FRESH ITALIAN FARE & NATURAL WINE AT MAYBACHUFER

CAPPERI: FRESH ITALIAN FARE & NATURAL WINE AT MAYBACHUFER

Can’t make it down to Italy this summer? Spend an evening at Capperi and Italy will come to you. From its prime Maybachufer location, this Italian “natural kitchen & craft wine” bar unites three Berlin gastronomy enterprises: Chef Thomas Mudersbach, formerly of May am Ufer (the restaurant’s previous iteration), Alessandro Denni, ex-Neontoaster, and Vincenzo Costanza and Pietro Nicotra of specialty importers Siziliessen. The result is a welcoming wine bar, restaurant, and deli that invites you to stay for a glass, aperitivo or a full dinner menu. The carefully-selected, well-annotated, all-Italian wine list makes a substantial contribution to Neukölln’s burgeoning natural wine scene. Ask Vincenzo for his recommendation, based on what you’re eating. Here it’s simple, fresh and light: For aperitivo, it’s hard to go past the Mozzarella di bufala DOP from Campania, served with olives, followed by the Tagliatelle “alla Genovese”, with green beans, potato and homemade basil pesto — and the juiciest pine nuts — makes for a delectable summer main, and a mini holiday for your taste buds. MARKUS ROLL RECOMMENDS: HACKBARTH’S

MARKUS ROLL RECOMMENDS: HACKBARTH’S

There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to explore all the cafés and bars that Berlin has to offer. It’s all too easy to lose track of the options. So when you need to make a decision, it’s advisable to have a true third place alternative up your sleeve — a so-called “plan C”, somewhere you can depend on. One such spot is the legendary Hackbarth’s, which has been around since the fall of the Wall. Here, I can find a quiet corner to sit and read my newspaper in peace in the mornings over a cup of coffee. Or hold a meeting further in the back with a slice of cake (topped with whipped cream, old school-style) or enjoy a pint of beer at the massive brass counter until the early hours — and all that, seven days a week. No need to look up the opening hours beforehand. The whole thing feels honest, reliable and rooted in tradition, partly due to the timeless and minimalist yet homey furnishings. When the world seems to be turning too fast, Hackbarth’s is here to help you unwind. (Text: Markus Roll / Photos: Pamina Aichhorn)

BRUS: TANK-TO-GLASS BREWPUB — NOT JUST FOR BEER NERDS

BRUS: TANK-TO-GLASS BREWPUB — NOT JUST FOR BEER NERDS

Situated within a renovated iron foundry on what might just be Copenhagen’s hippest street, find Brus: an eclectic bar with an onsite brewery and a backdrop of oak barrels. The enormous brewpub has a lively and leisurely feel that will make you either sink into its oak-panelled booths, nerd out at the bar with front-row seats to the shiny serving tanks or enjoy the late evening rays on the outdoor beer benches. Less experimental than Mikkeller’s brews but all the more drinkable, Brus’ selection ranges from their refreshing and tart Santa Rabarbera made with Berliner Weisse, rhubarb and mandarin, to malty American Brown Ale, to an imperial carrot cake stout with deep caramel notes and a creamy top hat of foam. A neat extra: The team behind Brus also serves cocktails on tap made with in-house distilled spirits and craft tonic – including the Verbenator made with lemon verbena, apple and vodka – which the team swears by, and so do we. Before you leave, get a souvenir: The shop has a nice selection of guest beers and local talent for the road. (Text: Victoria Pease / Photos: Brus)

RHINOÇÉROS: JAZZY DRINKS AND SOULFUL ATMOSPHERE

RHINOÇÉROS: JAZZY DRINKS AND SOULFUL ATMOSPHERE

When I asked for a good bar recommendation in the Gleimkiez, I was met with only weak responses. But then on my way home one evening, I stumbled upon Rhinoçéros. The warm lighting, the wooden interior, and the orange-colored retro lamps I could make out through the large window front magically drew me in — and rightfully so. In addition to the superb drinks, you will also find very fine jazz and soul music. For Bénédict Berna — the smart Frenchman who opened the cozy, casual bar in November 2017 together with his charismatic wife Martina Carl — the music that is played in a bar is just as important as the quality of the spirits. Bénédict’s passion for music is ever present; Rhinoçéros has a dedicated music corner consisting of a vintage sound system, a record player, and a vinyl collection. Speaking of spirits: Mixing good drinks is something the two of them sure know how to do! The Whiskey Sour and Blueberry Gin Tonic are highly recommended. French red wines, German white wines, and beers brewed in Berlin are also served here. If you feel like nibbling on something, the two bar owners offer a carefully selected array of French meats and cheeses from Bénédict’s home country, as well as homemade vegan olive paste and bread from Albatross bakery. My tip: Make sure to ask for the best seat in the house, the one by the fireplace. In this charming bar, good conversations are practically inevitable. (Text: Lisa Strube / Photos: Paul Rossaint)
