SARAH MIE NASS RECOMMENDS: SOBA

SARAH MIE NASS RECOMMENDS: SOBA

A new neighborhood treasure was revealed at Arkonaplatz in summer 2014. Café Soba opened its doors and quickly established itself as a little haven between the hustle and bustle of Mauerpark and Kastanienallee. All delicacies, such as the lemon meringue pie or the goat cheese panini with fig mustard and walnuts, are homemade. A special recommendation for like-minded coffee fanatics is the organic coffee from Friedrichshain! Just to avoid all misunderstandings: the name Soba does not indicate the serving of Japanese buckwheat noodles in this case. Rather, Soba refers to the Serbo-Croatian background of Pero who opened the café together with Christin. In his mother tongue, Soba simply means “room”. Just another reason why Soba visitors feel right at home. (Photos: Benjamin Lindenkreuz)

KASCHK: COFFEE & CRAFT BEER MEETS SHUFFLEBOARD

KASCHK: COFFEE & CRAFT BEER MEETS SHUFFLEBOARD

The season of chasing the sunlight is here. During this time, having a cup of high quality coffee in the morning sun can get you started in a happy mood to last throughout the day. So I’m thrilled to have found the new coffee shop Kaschk in the big black building at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz that offers exactly this. Owned by the same people of Oslo Kaffebar, this place opened just few weeks ago. But it is more than a coffee shop: in the evenings it turns into a great craft beer bar with a large selection of Scandinavian microbrews and local draft beers. They even house Germany’s first shuffleboards downstairs. Sun, great coffee and superb craft beer: what more can one ask for? (Text: Sven Hausherr / Photos: Kristian Moldskred)

DALUMA — A HAVEN FOR FRESH JUICE & HEALTH FOOD LOVERS

DALUMA — A HAVEN FOR FRESH JUICE & HEALTH FOOD LOVERS

Freshly squeezed juices have been a part of my life ever since I can remember. Luckily more and more people are starting to share my views on juicing. Meet David, Lukas and Marian; the trio teamed up to share their green and raw food experiences, and Daluma was born. The shop’s concept was conceived together with nutritionists and a Berlin chef. The high pressure juicer runs full blast, creating amazing results: juices with extremely high levels of pure essence of the fruits, vegetables and herbs. But Daluma offers a lot more – anything “green” that your taste buds may crave. Choose from chia pudding, coconut yoghurt or the homemade muesli with various toppings from açai to acerola throughout the day. My favorite is the red “beet box” juice, which some add a shot of ginger and oregano oil called “Burning Man” into. Give it a try! (Text: Milena Kalojanov / Photos: Ailine Liefeld)

GORDON — A RECORD STORE & CAFÉ SERVING ISRAELI CUISINE

GORDON — A RECORD STORE & CAFÉ SERVING ISRAELI CUISINE

Who wants to be rushed while digging through records?  Welcome to Gordon: a vinyl store and café in one. Doron Eisenberg and Nir Ivenizki offer albums from their own labelLegotek Records as well as select electronic tunes here. But that’s not all, because they are also great cooks. The menu offers Israeli classics, such as Shakshuka and Sabih. Bourekas, sandwiches served with hard boiled eggs, and the Swedish ginger ale by Naturfrisk, found only here throughout Berlin, make a surprisingly good match. The vegan chocomonster bar is made by their neighbor and is a sweet treat that goes perfectly with their coffee from the Barn Roastery or iced teas from ManuTeefaktur. I’ll be coming back for sure, for an early coffee with a rugelach (Jewish croissant) or for healthy and hearty lunch. Although Gordon’s stylish interior design with heavy emphasis on wood was all self-built in time for a soft opening in mid August 2014, the grand opening is tomorrow. Come by and be entertained by cool tunes and some tasty hummus. (Text: Nina Trippel / photo: Sasha Kharchenko)

ELISABETH SCHOTTE RECOMMENDS: CAFÉ ZUM LÖWEN

ELISABETH SCHOTTE RECOMMENDS: CAFÉ ZUM LÖWEN

Berliners like to spend their weekends at their weekend country houses. Some brave ones choose the permanent country life and build their own world that sometimes successfully mixes with the local color. This applies to Café “Zum Löwen”. An old guesthouse in the middle of the village, opposite the stone church, is where the ex-Berliners Lola Randl and Philipp Pfeiffer run their café. Here’s where an interesting mix of excursionists, the Uckermark locals and Berlin exiles meet. They also meet at the beautiful nearby Sabinensee lake. It’s a bit more quiet at Stiernsee, which can be reached within 20 minutes by bike. All work in Löwen-Café is done by Lola, Philipp and their friends: Ina serves espresso and cappuccino in a style that is still hard to find in the Uckermark region. Colin Reynolds, who is usually traveling to different markets with his mobile bakeshop “The Wanderer”, provides the cakes. Randl is also a filmmaker. At the moment she is shooting the documentary series “Landschwärmer“; a public press screening of the first season will take place in the old railway station of Wilmersdorf on August 2, 2014.
