A JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EU — GE59 EXHIBITION IN KREUZBERG

A JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EU — GE59 EXHIBITION IN KREUZBERG

Fancy a trip to the center of the European Union? It might seem a nebulous concept, but it’s a real place – and one that’s (no longer) far away. Since the beginning of 2020, a grain field in Gadheim – a hamlet of 80 people in northern Bavaria – has been the geographical center of the EU. As the external borders of the EU shift, so does its center, and with the departure of the UK, Gadheim has been thrust into the middle. Two people who have visited this geopolitical nucleus, Lisa Plesiutschnig and Bui Luu Quynh Nguyen, decided to make a project about it. The resulting work – “Reise zum Mittelpunkt der EU” (“Journey to the Centre of the EU”) – is being presented at creative agency Henkelhiedl’s GE59 Art-Work-Space until 09.06.2022. On display is a book with interviews and fold-out pictures plus a display of photographs taken of Gadheim and its inhabitants. The exhibition explores the village’s background and origins and features stories gathered by the pair during their visit to this European nexus.

THE GARAGE GIRLS — CLUB NIGHT AND FILM SCREENING FROM DJ DUO SERVING THE BEST OF UK GARAGE MUSIC

Good news: next Thursday (26.05.2022) is a bank holiday, meaning your Wednesday night can go on a little later than normal. If you want some midweek entertainment with guaranteed good vibes, BLVSH x The Honey Tapes at Paloma Bar is a solid choice. The club night is being co-hosted by The Honey Tapes, a regular radio show on Refuge from London-born DJs Becki and Kenza aka the Garage Girls. The duo have dedicated themselves to bringing banging UK garage music to Berlin’s clubs and airwaves with the help of special guest DJs. The party will see the pair joined by BLVSH, a DJ collective who will be serving everything from jazz and house to breaks, electro and bass. If you want to get acquainted with UK garage in advance, the Girls will be hosting a screening of Rewind 4Ever, a documentary charting the 1990s rise of the influential London-based genre (Sunday 22.05 13h & 15h). Join the duo from midday at Oona Bar for a drink, some vintage clothes shopping and bucketfuls of dance floor nostalgia.

DISCOVER UKRAINIAN DESIGNERS — POP-UP FASHION EVENT AT LOBE BLOCK

DISCOVER UKRAINIAN DESIGNERS — POP-UP FASHION EVENT AT LOBE BLOCK

Pop-ups are an amazing way to bring together local creatives. But what if they could help unite a continent? Enter ArtCode.UA, a cultural initiative that connects Ukrainian artists with the rest of Europe and raises awareness of the plight of their homeland. This Friday and Saturday (20.-21.05.2022), Artcode will be hosting a special fashion market at Lobe Block to present the work of Ukrainian talent. Browse ethereal organza-style chiffon dresses from Nadya Dzyak, tailored blazers and trousers with a design twist from Katerina Kvit and colorful stockings that pack a punch from Shur Shur, among many other items. Afterwards, accessorize with a chunky gold chain or clip-style ring with blue or yellow enamel courtesy of the demi-fine brand Poche Jewelry. If all the shopping makes you hungry, stop by the Lobe Lokal canteen for coffee and brunch. All proceeds from the pop-up go directly to the brands taking part, with a portion donated to those affected by the war. Ready to get to know Ukraine’s innovative design community? Lobe Block is where it’s at.

FORTUNA FOREST — FAIRYTALE PICNIC IN THE BRANDENBURG COUNTRYSIDE FEATURING LIVE MUSIC AND FORAGED FOOD

FORTUNA FOREST — FAIRYTALE PICNIC IN THE BRANDENBURG COUNTRYSIDE FEATURING LIVE MUSIC AND FORAGED FOOD

Urban life often has us daydreaming of rural escape: a charming picnic laid out on a long table, cozy blankets for lounging among the trees, the sun touching your skin. Accompanying all this is the hum of live music vibrating through the fresh air as you enjoy friendly conversation. No, you’re not in wonderland: this is what’s on offer at Fortuna Forestnext Saturday (28.05.2022) at Wehrmuehle Biesenthal in the Brandenburg countryside 50km north of Berlin. If there’s ever a place you’d want to teleport to, this would be it. The rural surroundings are where you will enjoy an outdoor feast of foraged seasonal and local produce including asparagus, nettle, wild garlic, fir, elderflower, goats cheese and pavlova. Oh, and all profits will be donated to Helping to Leave, an organization assisting those fleeing military conflicts, including in Ukraine. The acoustic picnic program includes a set from electronic musician Perila and a vinyl DJ set from Element to accompany you and your fellow diners. So venture into the forest, sit back and enjoy the rhythm and flavors of nature.

KULTUR.TANKEN: FUELING UP ON DIVERSE MUSIC AND PERFORMANCES AT FORMER ESSO FILLING STATION

KULTUR.TANKEN: FUELING UP ON DIVERSE MUSIC AND PERFORMANCES AT FORMER ESSO FILLING STATION

Hanging out at the gas station? If you did it in your youth, you can relive those times once again this Saturday (21.05.2022) at Kultur.tanken. Held at a former filling station, the one-day music and performance festival is organized by nine students from the FH Potsdam’s Cultural Studies program and has a lineup that celebrates Neukölln’s diversity. The students have created a program where 80% of the artists are either female, people of color or from different cultural backgrounds, and have engaged performers from Neukölln’s LGBTQ+ scene.

The music line-up includes Enana, whose sounds will carry you into another world, and WaqWaq Kingdom, who serve beats that will make it hard for you to keep your feet still. The location of the festival is itself noteworthy: the entire event takes place on the forecourt of the former Esso filling station on Sonnenallee. It’s a unique and poignant setting that reminds you of the dramatic changes in Neukölln’s physical and social makeup. A previously unused space is being revived with music and performance, a fact the students hope will show how vacant spaces can become sites of culture and community. This weekend’s festival is the first Kultur.tanken event – and hopefully not the last.
