D.L. ROELEN: EXPRESS YOURSELF WITH BERLIN-BORN FRAGRANCES — RECOMMENDED BY CHRISTIAN NÄTHLER

D.L. ROELEN: EXPRESS YOURSELF WITH BERLIN-BORN FRAGRANCES — RECOMMENDED BY CHRISTIAN NÄTHLER

I was sun-lounging at Heideglühen one endless summer afternoon when a stranger asked for my name and my nose. “Flower Boy,” said the pheromonal communicator, real name David Lucas Roelen. He was referring to one of his handcrafted signature scents. Aachen–born David is the founder of the eponymous fragrance house D.L. Roelen, for which he ditched a successful advertising career in London. Made from Turkish perfume oils and concocted in southern Germany, each of his five fragrances is wonderfully ambivalent – moss and cannabis, mint and smoke, citrus and cedar. My favorite, “The Door”, is an homage to Berghain: animal musk at the base with a latex heart and berries on top. Berlin’s club culture is only part of a recipe which also includes a spritz of soft masculinity and a dash of post-pretty femininity. Were he still in advertising, he might use the term “unisex” but ultimately, the interpretation is yours. “D.L. Roelen is about individual expression,” he tells me. “There is no brand story. I want to start conversations.” This is not just an empty mission statement – every bottle comes with David’s personal phone number. (Text: Christian Näthler / Photos: Louise L. Lindgren & D.L. GREENCADEMY STARTER KITS FOR LITTLE GARDENERS — RECOMMENDED BY SONIA LAGO

GREENCADEMY STARTER KITS FOR LITTLE GARDENERS — RECOMMENDED BY SONIA LAGO

Last week I was given a Greencademy grow box for my son. These kits, developed by sisters Jelena and Zeljana, let children grow their own vegetables and learn about nature in a playful and easy way. My four-year-old is now planting his first vegetable garden, doing all stages himself: adding water to the soil tablets in the provided coconut-fiber pots, sewing the organic radish and lettuce seeds into the soil before learning to be a bit patient! When, after five days, seeds finally sprouted from the earth, he was delighted. In the evening before going to bed, he reminds me how important it is to water his plants tomorrow, and continues to regularly check his garden, always amazed at how the greens grow bigger every day. Together we are looking forward to tasting our own vegetables from the small harvest – in three weeks according to the easy-to-follow instructions. These small boxes of greenery can currently be ordered directly from the Greencademy online shop. (Text: Sonia Lago / Photos: Rei Matsuoka)

HANDCRAFTED COCKTAILS AND FINE BREWS AT OMEGA BAR — RECOMMENDED BY MARIE SPRINGER

HANDCRAFTED COCKTAILS AND FINE BREWS AT OMEGA BAR — RECOMMENDED BY MARIE SPRINGER

Where should we head tonight: a pub or a cocktail bar? Here, hidden in the heart of Neukölln, you can do both. At Omega Bar, opened by the Krass Bösen Wolf team in 2013 you can get good draught beer and excellent cocktails all under one roof. The pub’s charm and relaxed industrial style makes it great for after work drinks and weekend meetups too. Omega’s patrons are mainly neighbors and regulars, and you can be sure you will be welcomed like a local. With names like Cornelius and Donald, the ten cocktails are playful and distinctive. Popcorn, cornflakes and mango ayran may not be classic cocktail ingredients, but they are combined here with true mixological sophistication. My favorite: the Vivien, a twist on the Pornstar Martini with vodka, passion fruit and vanilla, mixed with soy milk and a splash of champagne. The homemade shots are also a must. MARIA: COMFORT FOOD FOR HUNGRY HERBIVORES — RECOMMENDED BY STEFAN KEHL

MARIA: COMFORT FOOD FOR HUNGRY HERBIVORES — RECOMMENDED BY STEFAN KEHL

In late 2019, New Deli Yoga in Wrangelkiez transformed into Maria, and since then the restaurant has been delighting its guests with delicious, fresh cuisine. Owner Maria Koimtzoglou playfully conjures up tasty vegetarian and vegan combinations from all corners of the culinary world, like “The Stack” – a tower of potato rösti harmoniously layered with oriental aubergine and served on a homemade hummus spread. Also on the menu: Swedish Köttbullar with a creamy sauce and cranberries served with mashed potato. The carefully selected wines are an excellent accompaniment to Maria’s dishes, ranging from spicy, intense whites that bring out the roasted aromas of the dishes to milder more mineral bottles that are enjoyable on their own. By the way: There is also a lunch menu, as well as breakfast on weekends. Maria is the perfect place to enjoy comfort food that’s a little bit special.
