DER BLAUE FUCHS: TRADITIONAL GEORGIAN CUISINE AND NATURAL WINES IN A WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE

DER BLAUE FUCHS: TRADITIONAL GEORGIAN CUISINE AND NATURAL WINES IN A WELCOMING ATMOSPHERE

If you’ve never had the opportunity to travel to Georgia, we can highly recommend making a trip to “Der blaue Fuchs” at Kollwitzplatz. The Georgian restaurant has been around since 2019 and is now a popular neighborhood spot. Georgians are known for their hospitality and that’s also evident here. A friendly, cozy and familiar atmosphere with lots of colorful tablecloths, the walls are adorned with different works of Georgian artists from the 1920s such as Petre Otskheli. When it’s warm outside, the terrace is lively with high spirits.

Der blaue Fuchs is not only a restaurant, but also a wine bar: Georgian natural wine is special, as it’s made in clay amphorae. We recommend starting with Georgian amber (orange) wine, along with various appetizers from the menu. Especially delicious: grilled eggplant stuffed with a spicy walnut paste and baked beets with pomegranate seeds. It’s also worth ordering Georgian pastries like “khachapuri” or “lobiani” as well. When it comes to main courses, you are spoiled for choice: Would you prefer “lobio”, a kidney bean stew, or “adjapsandali”, a Georgian ratatouille with eggplant, potatoes and fresh herbs? If you like meat, you should definitely try the famous roast chicken “tabaka” with garlic sauce. Finally, we finished our meal with “korkoti”, a dessert made of wheat, raisins, walnuts, honey and a brandy made from grapes in oak barrels – “chacha”. Small tip: On weekends, it’s best to reserve a table ahead of time.

THE BUTTERFLY LOVERS — ALL-VEGAN CHINESE CUISINE BY THE PARK

THE BUTTERFLY LOVERS — ALL-VEGAN CHINESE CUISINE BY THE PARK

While I have cooked for my mom, I’ve never opened an entire restaurant for her. This is where Wen Wang – the owner of The Butterfly Lovers – and I differ. Before opening this completely vegan Chinese restaurant, Wen was running Tianfuzius in Schöneberg. Her vegan mother wanted a place she could also enjoy, and so in July 2021, Wen opened The Butterfly Lovers. Located on the edge of Volkspark am Weinberg in Mitte, the restaurant is a bright and approachable lunch spot that’s still sleek enough for dinner. Fresh flowers lift the space, complementing the floral wallpapered design on the bar. In summer, seating for 80 people spills out onto the terrace. The menu is hearty but not heavy: served with rice, the main dishes include fried vegan duck with salad and pickles, cauliflower with fermented black beans, braised mixed mushrooms in wine sauce and fried lotus roots with bell peppers.

We especially loved the Sichuan-style vegan chicken with tofu, onions, chili and peanuts, served in a crackled bowl of deep-fried rice paper and spiced with a generous amount of Sichuan pepper. The waiters can recommend dishes with less spice if you like, but if you’re not afraid of heat you’ll enjoy the Sichuan pepper throughout the menu. While vegan meats can sometimes feel a lazy option, the plant-based creations here impressed with their great flavor – especially the mock duck. To accompany there’s a drinks menu with beer on tap and soft drinks (we suggest the “Spring of Jade” with lime juice, ginger ale and soda) and a dessert menu that includes Mochi by Berlin masters Chubby Cheeks. Whether you are vegan or not, lunch or dinner at The Butterfly Lovers is a truly tasty choice. Wen Wang’s mom: you should be proud.

44BREKKIE — VIBRANT BRUNCHES WITH BRIOCHE BUNS, AVOCADO DREAMS, COFFEE AND COCKTAILS

44BREKKIE — VIBRANT BRUNCHES WITH BRIOCHE BUNS, AVOCADO DREAMS, COFFEE AND COCKTAILS

It’s no secret we’re obsessed with brunch: it’s a meal we firmly believe shouldn’t be restricted to Sundays. And if you want a jammy coddled egg with a fresh croissant every day of the week, you should look no further than 44Brekkie, the Prenzlauer Berg brunch restaurant which now has a second space in Friedrichshain. We paid a visit to the original location and were greeted by friendly staff, a fresh shot of coffee and a really nice brownie served on a pastel ceramic plate. The Friedrichshain location opened on Gabriel-Max-Straße at the beginning of 2022 and, besides coffee and baked goodies, promises dishes that go beyond your typical brunch food. The chefs have given the classics a new twist: the “Egg Drops”, for example, are insanely soft brioche buns filled with scrambled egg, a secret sauce and cheddar cheese. To that you can add avocado, double bacon and garlic, salmon, or a combination of them all. Vegans, keep reading: the “Avomaniac” avocado sourdough bread is drizzled with homemade asparagus sauce and topped with fresh and flavourful greens. And if you really want to indulge, the cocktails are not to be missed either. All this is offered on a walk-in basis and you can also get the goodies to go by ordering online.

W PIZZA MITTE — GO-TO PIZZERIA OPENS SLEEK SECOND RESTAURANT SERVING NEAPOLITAN CLASSICS AND NEW INVENTIONS

W PIZZA MITTE — GO-TO PIZZERIA OPENS SLEEK SECOND RESTAURANT SERVING NEAPOLITAN CLASSICS AND NEW INVENTIONS

Since opening in 2018, Neukölln’s W Pizza has established itself as one of Berlin’s go-to joints for the real Neapolitan deal. At the beginning of 2022, the pizza pros opened a second restaurant in Mitte, the appropriately named W Pizza Mitte. Located on the increasingly trendy corner of Chausseestraße and Invalidenstraße, the city-center eatery is altogether more polished. Where the Neukölln original is all about cozy dinners with Kiez-feeling, the Mitte restaurant is sleeker and more designed – a place for work lunches and early-evening dates. Fresh white walls are complemented with a green ceiling, floors, pillows and chairs and a large stainless steel bar with a neon light centerpiece. Graffiti self-portraits from Berlin artist Christian Hoosen complete the clean, urban look. As for the food: well if you know and love the pizza in Neukölln you won’t be disappointed. We had the veggie marinara, which as tradition stipulates comes without cheese – not that you’ll miss it, given the quality of the tomato sauce, olive oil and vegetables.

Tuna, salami and prosciutto-topped pizzas sit alongside vegan options, including one topped with vegan mozzarella. Those looking for a quick lunch will like the self-service style (you collect your pizza from the counter yourself), with small ready-made calzone pizzas available to grab and go. That said, you can easily spend time over a leisurely dinner complete with a bottle of natural wine from Caminito next door. Head to W on Saturday or Sunday and you can treat yourself to one of the slightly wacky weekend specials. We never thought we needed a pizza topped with vegan bolognese, but we’re here for it!

EIGHT GUESTS, EIGHT COURSES — BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED CHINESE FOOD IN INTIMATE SURROUNDINGS AT UUU

EIGHT GUESTS, EIGHT COURSES — BEAUTIFULLY PRESENTED CHINESE FOOD IN INTIMATE SURROUNDINGS AT UUU

What happens when you mix Chinese dining with mindfulness? You get UUU: the restaurant with space for eight guests, who eat a fixed eight-course menu and drink tea instead of alcohol. All diners sit at a single U-shaped table that reminds you a little bit of sitting in class, though this place – a former butcher’s shop in Wedding – looks much nicer than a schoolroom. And there is a teacher of sorts: Jonas Borchers, who delights in telling you about the different types of white, red and black tea (served cold, warm or as kombucha). Jonas studied in Shanghai and it has had a lasting impact; he effortlessly switches to Mandarin when speaking with his partner Yuhang Wu who does the cooking. Born in the far west of China, she helped her grandfather prepare the fish he caught himself before moving to Germany to work at Restaurant Tim Raue, Sven Elverfeld’s Aqua, and Coda.

The dishes have delicate, often fleeting flavours, though they remain striking and are always beautifully presented. The homemade tofu has a crispy deep-fried skin, while the creamy egg is whisked up with salty pork crackling, bitter vegetables and green Szechuan pepper for top notes. Desserts are unusual in Chinese cuisine, but here they’re a triumph: Yuhang’s pear sorbet with salted plum and almond and clay bean puree is wonderful, and could easily be served at Coda. At UUU, your senses are sharpened, and you and your neighbors eat quietly and reverently. If you want Chinese cuisine that’s a world away from what you find at takeaway restaurants, this little place is worth a booking.
