K.W.A: THE BERLIN KEBAB SHOP WITH ATTITUDE

K.W.A: THE BERLIN KEBAB SHOP WITH ATTITUDE

Have you ever noticed how few places there are in Mitte to get a great Döner? With the opening of K.W.A (short for Kebab with Attitude) that’s all started to change. The idea for something more than just an average Döner stand came from friends Jannis, Deniz and Daniel, who, after a successful pop-up in Schöneberg, decided to set up shop. The spot needed to be something special – original kebabs with a little bit of attitude. The menu ranges from the classic versions to more creative Döner, like the “K.W.A Funky Mango” with chicken, mango cranberry chutney and coconut sauce, or the “K.W.A Moringo” with halloumi, caramelized pineapple and guacamole. The meat is sustainably sourced, and can be served either in a dürüm, pide, or on a platter. They have vegetarian options and mezze and sides too. Don’t forget to try the beetroot with walnuts and grapes. Satisfy your sweet tooth on a hot day with an Ayran soft-serve ice cream with baklava – a magical combination of sweet, salty, and refreshing, best enjoyed at a mosaic-tiled table on the cosy terrace. This new spot makes kebabs the Berlin way, never neglecting its origins or tradition, but always with attitude. (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Johanna Rademacher-Flesland)

COREEN — KOREAN FOOD IN AN ELEGANT BISTRO ATMOSPHERE

COREEN — KOREAN FOOD IN AN ELEGANT BISTRO ATMOSPHERE

When you first walk into Coréen, the Korean restaurant established in December 2018, the stylish interior is the first thing you’ll notice. The brightness of the space, its pastel-colored tables and the white tiled bar all create a relaxed, inviting atmosphere. Designed by Studio Gizzem Cinar with inspiration from French bistros (hence the name Coréen, which means ‘Korean’ in French) and Asian interiors, the restaurant – with its bistro chairs and Papillon lamps – is a real eye-catcher. But all this is not meant to distract from the food, which is truly excellent: kimchi (of course), homemade Mandu dumplings, savory Korean pajeon pancakes, pak choi, and marinated spare ribs dominate the menu. Of course, there are also classics like ramyun, a Korean noodle soup with egg, and bibimbap, available in a sizzling bowl. Coréen is an offshoot of Charlottenburg’s Hanok, which is a popular spot for classic Korean BBQ, so their take on a BBQ bibimbap is a must. Coréen is well worth the visit, for both the design and the delicious meal. (Text: Katie Burton / Photos: Johanna Rademacher–Flesland & Coreen)

GET THE VEGETABLE GARDEN ON YOUR PLATE: TUTTI FRUTTI AT RESTAURANT RICHARD

GET THE VEGETABLE GARDEN ON YOUR PLATE: TUTTI FRUTTI AT RESTAURANT RICHARD

Restaurant Richard has been on my to-do list for years. Owner Hans Richard has created this fine dining jewel in the inconspicuous Köpenicker Straße, only five minutes away from Schlesi. From the varied seasonal menu to the thoughtful wine accompaniments and the contemporary artworks that adorn the walls, the formula here is perfect. Dining in an impressive 19th century salon under an opulently decorated wooden ceiling, you’ll feel transported to another world. Running until 20.07.2019, the current menu is inspired by the gardener’s rich summer harvest. And what particularly appeals is the idea of bringing the vegetable to the forefront without the need to be explicitly vegetarian. With some dishes, they don’t shy away from using animal products to add depth and taste, something I miss with a purely vegetarian meal. Starting from 06.08. the focus shifts to Mediterranean cuisine for one month. I would recommend making time to catch “Tutti Frutti” – the name of this seven-course vegetable feast – and let nature inspire you via your plate. (Text & Photos: Sven Hausherr)

FOR NOW: POP-UP DINNER SERIES IN SECRET LOCATION FROM VICTORIA ELÍASDÓTTIR

FOR NOW: POP-UP DINNER SERIES IN SECRET LOCATION FROM VICTORIA ELÍASDÓTTIR

I have mixed feelings about pop-up dinners. While I’ve had a few exceptional experiences, others have been downright horrible. When I heard about the new temporary culinary project For Now lead by Victoria Elíasdóttir of Dóttir fame, however, I knew I had to try it. It did not disappoint. Held in an undisclosed private location in Mitte, each dish of the eight-course dinner paired with wine was explained personally by the chef herself, a standard yet valuable practice that makes pop-ups truly unique. From her signature brown butter that accompanies the unexpectedly delicious potato bread, the unorthodox oysters, and the most beautiful and divine pavlova that concludes the evening, every dish was an expression of seasonal delights and prepared with the utmost care. Her feminine and romantic touches were not only pleasing to the eye, but elegantly delivered with fresh, clean and natural flavors. At For Now you can expect an utterly enjoyable time experiencing dishes from a seasoned chef cooking exactly for now: the seemingly brief yet lovely spring-summer season. NO BANANAS — A MEMORABLE MEDITERRANEAN EXPERIENCE

NO BANANAS — A MEMORABLE MEDITERRANEAN EXPERIENCE

No, this place doesn’t have any bananas, but they do have authentic food and drinks from the Aegean Sea. Eat, Drink & Share is the motto of No Bananas, explains Nevzat Ataray, the Istanbul-born owner of the Mediterranean restaurant. I discovered No Bananas by chance on my way home one evening and know I’ll never miss it again – because this place is special. No Bananas is refreshingly different: Fine multicultural dishes from Istanbul are celebrated and skillfully reinterpreted. For Nev, food is a form of expression, a common language that we all speak. The atmosphere in the restaurant is warm, cozy and relaxed. Food, culture and music intermingle harmoniously and guests instantly feel at home here. I usually like to come with friends after work for drinks and meze on the petrol-blue bench in front of the restaurant, or enjoy a delicious, ambient dinner on the weekends. Allow Istanbul’s cuisine to surprise you: Order the sardines, the manti (easily the best in Berlin), crispy fresh salicornia, artichokes with burrata and miso or the fava bean puree – and share some unforgettable moments with each other.
