WENHUI ZHENG RECOMMENDS: GOLDIES

WENHUI ZHENG RECOMMENDS: GOLDIES

Walking down Oranienstraße, your eye will, at some point, be inevitably drawn upwards to a bright, golden, neon light set against brown brick. You have arrived at Goldies — your new gateway to deep fried potato heaven. The interior is simple, and brightly lit. Wooden chairs against long tables align the walls, leading to an installation of scattered yellow light tubes at the back. Armed with the best deep fryer in town, the team at Goldies marries up the simple potato fry with honest yet ingenious combinations of flavors and toppings — my favourite being the “Miso-Furikake”: crispy fries topped with miso mayo, pickled radish, and a furikake algae sesame mix (best washed down with an Oreo milkshake.) Other crowd pleasures include the “Chilli-Cheese” and the “Peking Duck.” All reasonably priced, all delicious. So the next time you’re in the mood for Pommes, stop by Goldies, take a seat under the disco ball and prepare never to go back to plain old “Ketchup-Mayo” again. KÄRRECHO: THE VIBRANT FLAVORS OF VENEZUELA IN FRIEDRICHSHAIN

KÄRRECHO: THE VIBRANT FLAVORS OF VENEZUELA IN FRIEDRICHSHAIN

Biting into a hefty meat-filled arepa at Kärrecho provides satisfaction to the highest degree. Shredded beef melds with black beans and cheese inside a hot “Maïs Arepa”, which hails from Venezuela — where Marina Caldera, Carlos Bonilla and Rosana Di Miele were born and raised. In 2014, they started Kärrecho (a German-tinged play on the Spanish saying “¡qué arrecho!”, meaning “wie geil!”) at the ZK/U flea market in Moabit before opening their brick-and-mortar location in 2017. If you’re yet to sample an arepa, there’s one thing you must know: Eat it with your hands! Kärrecho’s arepas are delicious renditions of the classic Venezuelan street food staple, and when paired with crispy fried cassava or tostones (fried plantains), make for a messy but fabulous eating experience. Located on Neue Bahnhofstraße, the fast casual restaurant can get quite packed during weekday lunch (hey, Zalando employees have to eat too!) There are also plenty of special events — from brunch to “Empanadas Thursday” — to get in on. (Text: Devan Grimsrud / Photos: Luke Marshall Johnson)

FABIAN DIETRICH RECOMMENDS: LINO’S BBQ

FABIAN DIETRICH RECOMMENDS: LINO’S BBQ

Since the opening of Lino’s BBQ in Spring 2017, it has become a lot easier to take a culinary trip to Texas when a sudden hankering for barbecue hits. A little off the beaten path for some lovers of hot smoked meat specialties, the restaurant in the heart of Wedding is worth the trip. At Lino’s you’ll only find meat of the highest quality — smoked for up to 13 hours in a custom-made pit. Once ready, they shine as the main attraction in scrumptious sandwiches or in combination with a variety of side dishes. Thanks to the fine selection of beverages, from soft drinks and spirits to Brewbaker Pilsner and IPA on tap, your thirst won’t go unquenched here either. (Text: Fabian Dietrich / Fotos: Lino’s BBQ)

COLORS AND FLAVORS THAT POP AT BIKINI BERLIN’S NEW KANTINI

COLORS AND FLAVORS THAT POP AT BIKINI BERLIN’S NEW KANTINI

Kantini, a brand new food market located in the concept shopping mall Bikini Berlin, is the latest contender for Berlin’s most Instagrammable interior — and set to elevate lunch breaks in the city’s west. The prolific designer Werner Aisslinger and his studio are behind Kantini’s interior concept. Bold graphic grids meet LA-inspired flora and plush custom seating in a Hockney-esque pastel palette. Nab a prime seat in the loggia, fronted by large windows which overlook Berlin Zoo’s aviaries. Then take your pick of Kantini’s culinary offerings: Thirteen permanent stalls, plus two rotating pop-ups, represent ten different cuisines. Berlin fixtures like the Vietnamese Torstraße institution Royals and Rice are in the mix, next to newcomers such as Sons of Mana. This Hawaiian joint caught Cee Cee’s attention with its umami-loaded poke bowls — like the “Flamed Tuna”: succulent sashimi on a bed of rice, loaded with tangy tomato salsa, wakame and edamame guacamole and doused in lime-soya sauce. Fresh and zesty, it was as pleasing to the palette as Kantini’s interior is to the eye. JAPANESE TRADITION AT HOME IN FRIEDRICHSHAIN: HAKO RAMEN

JAPANESE TRADITION AT HOME IN FRIEDRICHSHAIN: HAKO RAMEN

At Hako, they know how to do ramen. But what makes their version of the ever-popular bowl of broth so divine? Toothsome noodles a plenty, of course, with a sprinkle of dried seaweed, crispy menma and green onions that add zing and texture to every bite. Opened in September 2017, Hako has been serving up ramen that Berliners are happily devouring on the daily. Take a glance at the minimal menu and add welcomed sides of pork gyoza potstickers, edamame and iced green tea to delight the senses. Their miso based broth is a real winner — the bowl finished with unctuous noodles and a beautiful tea-stained soft boiled egg. With paper origami lampshades hanging from the mahogany wood surrounds, you’ll find yourself sitting in some kind of culinary theatre — just as you might find in downtown Tokyo. Hako Ramen is a new spot that’s nearly too good to share, so head there early and let yourself be transported spoon after spoon. (Text & Photos: Emilie Wade)
