CHRISTINA HOFFMANN RECOMMENDS: BENDER KERAMIK

CHRISTINA HOFFMANN RECOMMENDS: BENDER KERAMIK

Pottery? Not quite what you’d expect of Berlin, but this is a bit different from the standard china mugs: simple, Japanese-style pottery, free of showy extras or twee pieces. Inside the store, you can discover the beautiful irregularities that make each of the handmade vases, bowls, and plates unique. In Anemone Bender’s shop, located next to Sasarteig between Schiller and Reuterkiez, the talented ceramist not only sells her own handcrafted pieces but also offers back-to-basics pottery classes. In a time when increasing globalisation and digitalisation means that creating things in small groups seems like a rarity, you can enjoy having the shop to yourself during the two hour classes, held four times a week. For the younger visitors there are also clay figurines just waiting to be painted. Special orders and individual designs for delicate handworked decoration can be requested, amongst other items such as flowerpots, clay tupperware and small pans. It’s not only a place for things to be sold, but also to be personalised, in a lovely creative setting. (Text: Christina J. Hoffmann / Photo: Janar Siniloo)
