THE TRUTH OF THE MOMENT — COLD WAR PHOTO TESTIMONIES AT F3 AND GALERIE BUCHKUNST

THE TRUTH OF THE MOMENT — COLD WAR PHOTO TESTIMONIES AT F3 AND GALERIE BUCHKUNST

With the start of April came the end of the European Month of Photography. But don’t worry: you still have the chance to immerse yourself in photo art this month and next. F3 – Freiraum für Fotografie is exhibiting photographs by Magnum photographer Thomas Höpker in the show “Intimate History”. In impressive reportages, Höpker documented cities such as New York and Rome, traveled to warzones and photographed everyday life in the GDR in the 1970s. His work always focuses on people and their stories. You can see it for yourself at the F3 gallery (05 & 07.05.2023). On 05.05, F3 will screen the documentary “Dear Memories – A Journey with Magnum Photographer Thomas Hoepker” and on 07.05, curator Miriam Zlobinski will introduce the show from 11h. Tickets for both events are available here.

Then it’s over to Galerie Buchkunst Berlin and the current exhibition “Dissidentenball – Photography under Surveillance” which showcases the works of photographers Harald Hauswald and Jindřich Štreit, who were both monitored and arrested for their portrayal of everyday life under communist dictatorships. Despite pressure from the surveillance apparatuses of the GDR and Czech Republic respectively, Hauswald and Štreit continued to photograph, leaving realistic insights into this time. Though it is hard-hitting, a lightness prevails in the often powerful pictures. Hauswald and Štreit both manage to create a highly emotional visual world with their sensitivity and style. At the closing on 29.04 in the cozy Galerie am Monbijoupark, Ostkreuz photographer Harald Hauswald and gallery owner Thomas Gust will guide visitors through his pictures and tell them, among other things, how his images crossed the Iron Curtain and onto the front pages of western newspapers.
