Fresh fish is often hard to come by in landlocked Berlin, but that’s something seafood vendor Fish Klub is on a mission to change. Now with two outlets in Kreuzberg and Charlottenburg, the project began at Markthalle Neun in October 2019, serving up fresh produce that prioritizes sustainability and traceability. The diverse catch is all sourced from France, with much of the supply coming from Bretagne and Vendée on the French Atlantic coast. Behind the operation is Parisian-born Margaux Friocourt, who lived in nine different countries before settling in Berlin in 2016 to import oysters from the renowned area of Marennes-Oléron. The oysters are a favorite amongst restaurateurs and foodies across town, but the range also includes the likes of white, sweet zebra sea bream, cuckoo wrasse (great for soups and stews), royal sea bream plus classic salmon, hake and pollock.
These delicacies can now be picked up out west at the Fish Klub and Wine stand that opened in January 2021 at the Wilma market hall in Charlottenburg. The outlet is set up as a bar and besides fresh fish also offers beautifully presented ready-to-eat dishes and matching natural and biodynamic wines. Highlights include signature Japanese-style “tataki” tuna, mackerel sandwiches on handmade brioche buns and a range of homemade sauces. Whether you’re east or west, Fish Klub is a go-to purveyor of quality catches – and not just on a Friday!
