As always, May is all about art. As if Gallery Weekend wasn’t enough reason for extraordinary FOMO, Sellerie Weekendopens in tandem with the program of the Berlin off-space scene, with events throughout the city. Don’t miss the following… Tonight (01.05.2025) things get off to an unconventional start with the art start-up Works on Skin and a small pop-up at Galerie Irrgang on Friedrichstraße. The new flight of tattooable art editions will be on display. You can count on a good opening party that’s far from the mainstream. You can also rely on everything curated by Frank Hauschildt. Tomorrow (02.05.) from 7 p.m., he will open a poetic solo show by 90-year-old and previously unknown artist Elisabeth Schrader, who has created a manic work from crocheted telephone braid, in an interim space at the SteDi Foundation. Think animals, creatures and objects with mythical charm, somewhere between Louise Bourgeois and Mike Kelly. It might just be the insider tip of the weekend. Before that, the official “Sellerie Weekend” Kick-Off Party starts in the afternoon in the new Spoiler group space in Moabit, with performances by Niklas Apfel and the Collectif Blitzbereit. If you prefer celebrating in the evening, head to the other side of the city in Tempelhof, at…
Aktionshaus. Béton Brut, with edible sculpture by Maria Ader and DJ Tapes, starts at 7 pm. Once you’ve recovered from dancing on Saturday, the city beckons with all its newly opened shows. At the gimp, the sculptural-installative and highly aestheticized exhibition “Bending The Air, Breaking The Time” by multidisciplinary artist Sümer Sayin will open again, especially for the weekend. At Kvost, Polish artist Aneta Grzeszykowska plays with fragmentation, superficiality, the external image, and self-perception. The Friedrichshain-based Raum für Drastische Maßnahmen is all about mistakes and what happens to them when you embrace them. “Fehldrucke” is the name of the group exhibition. It will end with an auction on May 16, so mark your calendars. The Zwitschermaschine, on Potse, is also exhibiting a huge group exhibition. It’s called “Handlung” and everything can be purchased. On Saturday from 6 pm there will also be music from the turntable. If you prefer design to art, check out the new selection at Jochum Rodgers in Charlottenburg. Here, find great furniture and objects by Piero Fornasetti, among others, combined with lights by various designers. And if it’s just too crowded in the city center, head south to the House of the Wannsee Conference — where the sound installation by Yael Reuveny, Clemens Walter and Barbara Morgenstern, “Wulf, die Zicklein und der vergessene Garten”, opened a few days ago. Also far away, but in the other direction, is the Pankow Gallery. Here you’ll find enchanting paintings by Ernst Schroeder. The exhibition is also aptly called “Silence”. There’s something for everyone.
