FACES AND FRONTIERS: BERLIN TRAVELING THROUGH TIME AT THE BERLINISCHE GALERIE

Embark on a journey into the last century, away from the fleeting images on Instagram and closer to the portraits of individuals imbued with a rare dignity and an unpaired aura. At the Berlinische Gallerie’s exhibition, running through mid-August 2019, you can come “Face to Face” with Berlin artist Lotte Laserstein, a remarkable chronicler of the 1920s and 1930s. One of the first women to complete her studies at the Berlin Academy of Arts, the painter used her unique brushstroke to defy the normative conventions of gender roles of her heyday. It is the modern women and men of Laserstein’s time, represented in her work in all their authenticity, that build the core of the show. Running parallel is the exhibition “Gesichter der 20er-Jahre”, featuring portraits of Laserstein’s artistic contemporaries. For those who then wish to travel 60 years ahead from here, there is “The City’s Edge”, an exhibition on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, featuring photographs of the city’s outer limits, taken by André Kirchner between 1993/94. At the end of your journey, you will stroll back into the now at a somewhat slower pace and with a deeper understanding of Berlin’s moving history.(Text: Rosa Künzler / Photos: VG Bild-Kunst, André Kirchner und Noshe)
