HAPPY SHOP: DESIGNER CLOTHING, CAFÉ AND CO-WORKING SPACE

Berlin tends to have a predilection for black; black clothes, black accessories, black third-wave coffee… But in Torstrasse’s Happy Shop Global Alliance, they go against the grain. Head of concept SJ Ballantyne, who carried out the rebranding of the store in June 2015 and is responsible for selecting and curating the collections, does not limit the products to the monochrome. The store values gorgeously rich tones in every shade, alongside intricate patterns, uncommon fabrics and high quality materials. They source and select less predictable designers, such as Miharayasuhiro, Interzoo and Onar. Happy Shop is also currently host to a selection of Ghassan Salameh’s Arthropod lighting collection. His lamps, which look beautifully alien on their five-jointed legs in brushed steel and chrome, throw huge circles of light onto the wooden interior of the store, illuminating the rails of hanging clothes. Exit through a sliding door, and you’ll see what appears to be a shipping container conspicuously dumped in the back yard. However, it has been adapted to serve as home to Casita, their coffee shop, which serves a selection of organic cakes and cookies coupled with delicious teas and coffee blends like East London’s Square Mile. The space also holds Curro, their co-working space open seven days per week. The coffee may be black, but Happy Shop still adds a real splash of color to Mitte, and with a relaxed atmosphere and exquisitely picked items, it definitely lives up to its name.
