IN THE BACKYARD: ALEXANDRA BIRCKEN IN BQ’S UPSTAIRS ROOM

IN THE BACKYARD: ALEXANDRA BIRCKEN IN BQ’S UPSTAIRS ROOM

BQ gallery is known for its conceptual yet philosophical art shows, often using puns to create attention. Currently they are showing an exhibition by a Turner Prize winner Richard Wright in the main rooms, which is conceived in consecutive chapters and ongoing for one year (!). The gallery is also unveiling a new addition during the 2014 Gallery Weekend: a new floor. For upstairs BQ has invited Alexandra Bircken, an artist we’ve been eying for a while now, known for her truly maverick organic sculptures. Her solo show is called “B.U.F.F.” – as in Big Ugly Fat Fellow – a military slang for the US long range bomber B-52. Not coincidentally, her large scale latex objects look like over-sized phallic symbols. Birckens’ background in fashion design offers an interesting approach in use of materials and its aesthetics. (Image left: Alexandra Bircken; right: Richard Wright / Photos: Roman März / Courtesy: BQ)
