JUNG UND ARTIG AT THE KULTURSOMMERFESTIVAL — OUTDOOR VIDEO ART AT THE BERLINISCHE GALERIE

JUNG UND ARTIG AT THE KULTURSOMMERFESTIVAL — OUTDOOR VIDEO ART AT THE BERLINISCHE GALERIE

In my mid twenties I decided to become a member of a museum. Or rather, it just happened because I calculated how much I’d save on admission by getting to see all the exhibitions for free. It felt grown-up and reasonable to associate myself with an institution. Due to chance, pragmatism and my own interests, I decided to join Jung und Artig, the Berlinische Galerie’s “Young Friends” membership program. It seemed natural (as a Berliner, I felt a special connection to the collection) and logical (I lived in Neukölln). It was absolutely the right decision, as illustrated not only by the current Sibylle Bergemann exhibition, but also by the events planned in the coming weeks. As part of the Kultursommerfestival Berlin 2022, Jung und Artig will be presenting outdoor video art screenings. Things kick off on Saturday (09.07.2022) at Bauhütte Kreuzberg with “Subjekträume – eine lesbische Produktionskapsel” by filmmakers Katharina Voß and Janin Afken. In their film, the pair recall the Schöneberg space “Pelze Multimedia” on Potsdamer Straße, which from 1981 to 1996 enabled women to leave social norms behind and redefine femininity for themselves.

Starting at 20h, there will be music and drinks, followed by an artist talk with Anne Bitterwolf, curator of the video program, and a film screening. If you’re in the mood for open-air video art but are out of town, you’ll have another chance in August and September. On 17.08.2022, Pilvi Takala’s screening outside the gallery will examine norms of coexistence between different social groups, a topic further explored in conversation with Thomas Köhler. If you can’t make it to Yalda Afsah’sacclaimed solo exhibition at Kunstverein München you can also see her work at Bauhütte (10.09.2022) where once again, there will be drinks and an artist talk. Of course, the events can also be attended without museum membership – and thanks to the Kultursommerfestival, it will all be free of charge. That said, membership is still worthwhile. I promise.
