In November 2015, following the success of their Prenzlauer Berg store, food enthusiasts Goldhahn und Sampson opened their newest shop in a West Berlin former supermarket. The spacious interior holds a café, a large deli stocked with delicacies, cookbooks from around the world and on top of this a huge, fully equipped kitchen which hosts their range of cooking classes, all available to book online. I tested their French Bistro class, and spent an evening making a traditional menu of salade Niçoise, moules frites with tarragon mayonnaise, roast lamb, bean cassoulet and tarte au citron. Accompanied by a large glass of L’Oustalet Blanc, the cutting and the preparation was swiftly underway. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, sharing delicious food with a diverse and interesting group in a relaxed atmosphere. I laughed a lot, went home feeling inspired and even recreated several dishes – including my first successful crusty baguette. I regret only one thing: when I left the store late that night filled with joy and drink, I should have thought to purchase some of their incredible food, such as the Sironi bread or chocolate from Candy Farm Berlin. But I will certainly go back. (Text: Helen von der Höden / Photo: Mani Bakhshpour)
