When I got lost in Steglitz and found this confectionery one day, that was it for me. I found temptations called Linzer tart, delicacies made with Florentine apple, cassis, gooseberry meringue or nougat from Brussels, all waiting to be eaten; not to mention the baumkuchens displayed all over the shop. The “Konditorei Rabien’s history dates back to 1878 and still is family-run, now in the fourth generation. Today 27 confectionaries prepare the countless tarts, pralines, truffles and baumkuchens. The famous German cake is made with thin layers of dough on a rotating horizontal spit in front of open fire and covered with chocolate glaze. The cake is wrapped and shipped as a “German specialty” across the globe, to destinations like Japan and Dubai. You can get your slice of baumkuchen online or in person in Steglitz, the only branch in Berlin.
