LOTHAR BÜSTGENS RECOMMENDS: ARTFUL GRUNEWALD EXCURSIONS

Visitors coming to Berlin don’t often travel to Grunewald, although the area between upper Kurfürstendamm and Roseneck boasts beautiful Welhelmenian villas in quiet side streets. The eventful and sad history of these houses, though, only becomes known when one digs a little deeper, taking the historic development of the district into account. Sightseers can also find modern art here. On Knausttraße, find Villa Köppe, which displays the works of young artists in changing exhibitions. Currently the Berlin-residing artist Bodo Rott is showing his works here. His central themes are a childlike joy for life, while revealing the cracks in an idyllic world. At second glance his artworks display violence, power, and oppression. They are action-packed pictures and monotypes, wildly contrasting to the Wilhelmenian-period charm of Villa Köppe.
