It was only by chance that I came across Rogacki, presumably the best address for fine food in the former Berlin West. Between all the stores along the street it’s easy to miss this shop that doesn’t offer anything “fine” at all from the outside. But don’t be deceived by the the façade and the dated interior design because you’ll find real delicacies here: fresh and live fish, superior meat and cold cuts, and loads of other specialties – since 1928. The best part is the “Schlemmereck” as well as the “Pastaeck”, a meeting point for well-established Berliner gourmets. If you commit yourself to this special atmosphere, you can experience excellent, freshly prepared daily dishes; may it be Scampi with seasonal vegetables or a top-notch surf’n’turf. Every now and then I go there with my Berlin-Mitte-visitors on a Saturday afternoon, though it can be difficult at times to find a place at one of the bar tables. Even during the hectic times the crowd remains relaxed and enjoys a glass of Federweisser on the house for a longer wait. I, for one, totally fell for Rogacki’s faded old West Berlin charm!
