I’ve spent more time in West Berlin in the last two months than in the last two years combined. There’s so much going on there now. My latest trip was to Bar Am Steinplaz near Savigny Platz. This place was a typical West Berlin artists bar 60 years ago, but after it was sold it stayed empty for a long time. Earlier this year it opened up again to regain its reputation. Located inside Hotel Am Steinplatz, not only is it a perfect hideaway bar for a date, but is also a great place to rediscover the world of traditional bar tending while getting inspired by the bar’s host Christian Gentemann. Simply talk to him or his team and let them come up with the perfect drink for you. I loved their Sasarac (one of my favorite drinks at the moment), but I must say Christian’s own creation “red beet pineapple smash” was to die for! Earthy, fresh red beet juice blended with pineapple puree and local gin, then garnished with some peppermint leaves – it instantly made it on my top five list! If you prefer not to drink on an empty stomach, their bar food is also one of a kind. (Text: Sven Hausherr)
