We’ve all been missing our favorite gastronomy venues during the past year of ever-changing lockdowns. Last weekend we were welcomed back with palpable excitement to terraces across the city. And while it would be impossible to list all the places we’re looking forward to dining at again, here are a few tips for where to start, from breakfast in a cemetery courtyard to regional Thai lunch and cocktails in a former brewery. To start the day, 21 gramm in Neukölln is serving breakfast and brunch in their brick courtyard, plus cocktails and drinks should you decide to lengthen your brunch into the evening. For a full-day affair, Café am Neuen See may also interest you with their cafe, beer garden and restaurant. Their boat hire is also open if you fancy a scenic post-lunch cruise around Tiergarten. Over to Prenzlauer Berg and Kink Bar and Restaurant, which opened in a former brewery in June 2020. The terrace is back, and you can expect dishes such as langoustine with fermented celery, ruppiner lamb saddle with goat cheese moussaka and horseradish sorbet with yogurt and passionfruit for a sweet finish.
Shishi meanwhile brings Israeli-Mediterranean inspired dishes to the bold, blue tables of its Kreuzberg courtyard, with a wine menu of 100% natural wines. Also available are jars of homemade jams, dukkah and sauces to take home to keep the flavors lasting. Meanwhile, Ernst’s little brother Julius is taking advance reservations for their sun-soaked tables in Wedding, with vegetables front and center of their tasting and carte blanche menus. The menu at Lok6 is the epitome of summer with its bright flavors, and the terrace on the northernmost side of Gleisdreieck means a park stroll is easily accessible after you’ve tried a few of their whisky sours. In Friedrichshain, Khwan serves up regional Thai dishes and wood-fired barbecue to tables on the open patio. Expect punchy flavors such as the Som Tam papaya salad, Pla Tod Isaan fish with fresh herbs, and BBQ chicken with spicy tamarind sauce. Finally, Café Benjamine (formerly Cafe K) is especially great for a day trip with its terrace in the sculpture garden of the Georg Kolbe Museum – ideal for a digestive stroll around the exhibition or the greenery of Grunewald…
