ORIGINAL UNVERPACKT: WASTE-FREE SHOPPING ARRIVES IN THE BERGMANNKIEZ

Already planning your New Year’s resolutions? How about more sustainability and less consumerism in your life? Packaging-free shop Original Unverpackt is your ticket. Since 2014, their original Wienerstrasse store has been boldly fighting shrink-wrapping and plastic bags, and is now joined by a lovely second store in the Bergmannkiez. Here, instead of individually wrapped items there are big, beautiful glass dispensers lined up along the walls inviting you to fill and refill, from nuts to herbs to natural soaps – everything you want in the exact quantity you need. After just a small handful of pumpkin seeds to garnish that Sunday dinner of yours? Not a problem! Thinking of making your own hazelnut paste? You’ve come to the right place. Founder Milena Glimbovski and her team are driven by a clear goal: to change not only individual consumer behaviour but to prompt a radical rethink of how the retail industry works. So grab your empty jam jars and jute bags and head to Großbeerenstraße to clear your conscience. (Text: Hanna Komornitzyk / Photos: Laura Hoffmann & Original Unverpackt)
