PADDLING NEAR BURG IN THE SPREEWALD COUNTRYSIDE

PADDLING NEAR BURG IN THE SPREEWALD COUNTRYSIDE

At first it may sound like an excursion for the elderly, but actually it is a truly refreshing daytime fun and far from being a boring booze cruise. It requires a lot of physical exertion, some interesting skills and can be a testament to all types of relationships. You can start the tour anywhere, though in the high season the boats should be reserved in advance. The kayaks fit pairs or groups of three while the canoes fit maximum of four people (approx. 25 euro/day). Groups of eight can also have someone drive them (approx. 14 euro/person for 3 hours), and catering from coffees to grill is inclusive. During busy weekends the so-called “watergate kids” help you through the gates by singing (potential YouTube hits!) – so have some change handy. At certain areas it can get humorously tumultuous, but there is a wide network of waterways and space for idyllic relaxation. You’ll discover many piers and hidden paradises for your next holiday destinations ashore. It is also great in winter, when everything is frozen and you can ice skate through the winter-fairytale landscape. But for now, it’s warm and the Spreewald is a perfect place for a quick summer trip. (Text & photos: Stephanie Franzius)
