PALAIS BRUT: THE VACATION DOMICILE FOR DESIGN FANS IN MÄRKISCH-ODERLAND

PALAIS BRUT: THE VACATION DOMICILE FOR DESIGN FANS IN MÄRKISCH-ODERLAND

A charming façade it is not. But the charm lies precisely in this: the contrast between the aesthetics of the prefabricated building and its marvelous interior. But let’s work our way from the outside in. If you’ve traveled the hour-plus drive from Berlin-Mitte towards Märkisch-Oderland, you’ll come to Palais Brut, a house at the end of a tranquil country road, at the end of a row of detached houses that all look similar. But this one is a little different: the gray cuboid from the GDR era has been transformed into a contemporary vacation home for architecture fans. The front garden leads to the door. Enter on the left or right? If there are two of you, the smaller unit on the left is suitable, while the larger one on the right can accommodate up to eight people in three bedrooms. Each apartment can be equipped with a baby crib on request. Leaving the “brut” façade behind you, you stand in the hallway and are amazed: the two floors merge into one another thanks to a partially removed ceiling and the standard windows have been replaced by an extra-large pane that opens up a view of the garden. You want to and should drop everything, literal and emotional baggage, and let yourself fall onto the oversized, cozy sofa and simply linger, letting your gaze wander between the inner visual axes and the view of the greenery. But of course, the open kitchen in bright green and the long table invite you to cook and eat together (in summer, this is also possible on the small terrace). There is a sofa and armchairs by the floor-to-ceiling window upstairs.

Your gaze rests on the many works of art that reflect the balance between brutalist and lively. We paid a visit to the Palais Brut in winter and on cloudy days, there is hardly a better place to enjoy the little daylight inside. The sauna next to the house is only twenty steps away and walks across the fields are close by in the truest sense of the word. If the weather is good and swimming season is calling, it’s only a short trip to nearby Buckow and the beautiful Schermützelsee. All that’s missing is the opportunity for a little country getaway, right? You can find free slots and costs on the Palais Brut website
