LOOKING OUT, LISTENING IN, WINDING DOWN: THE BRANDENBURG REFUGIUM V40 BY ARTIST BETTINA KRIEG

Almost too beautiful to leave, welcome to Refugium V40, the live-work studio of artist Bettina Krieg in Brandenburg. The artist’s retreat is tucked away in the small village of Vielitz, in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district. The spot captivates with absolute tranquility. If you take the short walk toward Vielitzsee, chances are you won’t encounter a soul. Unless, of course, a group is at the neighboring The Vield for an offsite (we’ve been there too — see here). At Refugium V40, it’s not about others or the “outside world”; it’s about you. A barn once stood on the property, over 100 years old, which Bettina has lovingly transformed into her personal space. When the barn’s brick remains needed a new roof, the construction trailer came to the rescue. What began as a practical solution became a stylish tiny house, inviting reading, lingering, and alone time. Though compact, the trailer offers plenty of room for new ideas. The stove keeps it cozy in winter, the terrace doubles as a garden, and the shower is practically outdoors. A second small trailer has been added, available for rent if you come with friends. And you can also stay in the live-work studio where Bettina creates her art, if she’s not around.

Everything happens in one space here: the square layout centers around an oversized sofa, big enough for more than one person to lounge on. My personal highlight is gazing at the large wood-burning stove together from the sofa. Meanwhile, you can cook or draw and write at one of the two desks. Windows frame the surroundings beautifully, but the real magic is the unique energy of the room. With its wooden floors, exposed beams, and natural textiles, it radiates an incredible sense of calm and positivity. It’s no coincidence Bettina knows exactly how to cultivate this energy. She also works as a Shiatsu therapist, offering sessions here as well as in Berlin. If you want to relax or work remotely in peace, this is the place. And if the energy of the space, the Brandenburg landscape, and the beautiful lake aren’t enough to unwind, there’s always the sauna.
