REMIX ALMANYA: A POST-MIGRANT HIP HOP NARRATIVE BY MURAT GÜNGÖR AND HANNE SLOH AT BALLHAUS NAUNYNSTRASSE

The technique of remixing is hip hop culture’s best friend, so to speak. Murat Güngör and Hannes Loh – both ex-rappers and experts in the genre – have puzzled together a similarly eclectic approach in their deep and simultaneously entertaining lecture-performance Remix Almanya. What role do rap, migration and empowerment play in four decades of so-called “gastarbeiter” culture and immigration history in Germany? And what does today’s gangsta rap actually have to do with the music of the migrants of the 1960s/70s and exiles of the 1980s? Images, texts, songs (by Metin Türköz, Advanced Chemistry, Eko Fresh, Haftbefehl or SXTN, among others) and films flow into the discourse, which is additionally enriched with personal experiences and social debate. All the way back in 2002, Murat Güngör and Hannes Loh stimulated the discourse around Hip Hop, migration, racism and responsibility with their book “Fear of a Kanak Planet”. This week they are guests at Ballhaus Naunynstraße with their post-migrant hip hop narrative Remix Almanya. Mark the date: it’s March the 12th from 20h as part of the Decolonial Frequencies festival, curated in collaboration with artist-scholar meLê yamomo.
