SONDER 54 — SUMINIGASHI AND THE ART OF MARBLING

SONDER 54 — SUMINIGASHI AND THE ART OF MARBLING

A stretch of multicolored bunting signals the entrance of Sonder 54, a newly opened art space that also hosts hands-on workshops. Founded in 2015 by Carly Dorrington, who sells her beautiful textiles under Luir clothing and accessories, and illustrator designer Katey Svensson, other members of the studio include Ana Romero of Attina marbled products, and Meghan Murphy. It is through the fascinating marbling techniques used by Ana that the ideas for workshops began, such as their incredible Suminigashi paper marbling workshop; a 12th century Japanese technique which involves using floating colors swirling and spreading over a liquid surface. The studio also broadens out into other topics of interest, like a natural cosmetics workshop to create original, organic skincare products. The atmosphere is tranquil yet bursting with creative expression, with the artists dedicated to exploring new techniques and sharing that knowledge. You can find a full schedule for workshops here, but this weekend go along and try the art of marbling for yourself! (Text: Antonia Harris)
