WITZ HUMMUS — ODE TO THE HUMBLE CHICKPEA

WITZ HUMMUS — ODE TO THE HUMBLE CHICKPEA

The first thing I noticed when approaching Witz Hummus along Kreuzberg’s Blücherstraße was the homemade wooden sign propped against a wall. Calling out the shop’s name in quirky white letters, the sign reflects the establishment’s spirit as well as its menu: simple, homemade and welcoming. Hummus here is always served fresh, with chickpeas imported from Kazakhstan and blended with olive oil to create the smoothest and most delicious hummus you may ever taste. This dish is served with a classic side of pita bread, along with olives, onions, and boiled eggs or fried eggplant. Witz is unassuming in its nature, which is exactly what owner Marat Beltser wanted. “I don’t want a huge queue, you know? That would miss the whole point of what I’m doing. I want to be able to talk to you,” he says of his interior concept. Although Witz has only been open since April 2018, it seems to have been nestled into this corner of Graefekiez forever, making your first (and definitely not last) trip there feel like a comforting homecoming of sorts.
