Zola Jesus crept into my ear – one track was a part of my friend’s mixtape which I had on heavy rotation on my iPod. Although I didn’t know who the song was by, I was immediately drawn to it. Meanwhile I knew that Zola Jesus was behind the song “Night” (video) and I was longing for more. Luckily, Nika Roza Danilova (Zola Jesus’ real name) has just released a new album titled “Conatus”. The word is a philosophical term but instead of analyzing her work by the title, here is my take: Zola Jesus’s voice reminds me of Bat for Lashes and the music of Siouxsie and the Banshees. Tonight is her one and only concert in Germany before she heads back to Paris and later to her home country USA.
