ANNA-MARIA SCHARF RECOMMENDS: CAFÉ VALENTIN

ANNA-MARIA SCHARF RECOMMENDS: CAFÉ VALENTIN

Colorful bouquets placed on mid-century furniture, a desk made of wooden planks and a charming hostess add loads of special Scandinavian feel to Café Valentin. But if all you do is drink their delicious coffee here, you will miss the actual culinary highlights. Behind “Smørrebrød” (buttered bread) is much more to discover than the name suggests. Being a vegetarian, the café’s owner Lo is always seeking to refresh her menu. Thus, next to their classics, she also sells fig and walnut bread, topped and stuffed with all kinds of berries, nuts, salads and cheese. Lo doesn’t just pick the flowers from Treptow’s gardens herself, some parts of her fresh ingredients are also from there. Let yourself be pleasantly surprised by the ever-changing selection of pastries: cinnamon scented Kanelbulle, pastel Prinsesstårta and almond and blueberry cakes. A porridge breakfast is also in the works for the coming months — and will probably be more than plain oatmeal!
