CHUMMY NAILS: CREATIVE NAIL DESIGN AND THE LATEST MANICURE TRENDS IN PRENZLAUER BERG

CHUMMY NAILS: CREATIVE NAIL DESIGN AND THE LATEST MANICURE TRENDS IN PRENZLAUER BERG

Her fascination with nail art began at the age of ten after watching many, many YouTube tutorials. Today she’s done the nails of international pop stars such as Rosalía. Oksana Zavora (aka Chummy Nails) hails from Kyiv but has lived in Berlin since 2022 (when she moved due to war) and has been embellishing nails in her small studio in the Bötzowviertel district since March 2023. In addition to the nude-toned “clean girl” aesthetic, high gloss and French tip, Oksana’s designs can also be wonderfully extravagant. Here, there are no limits to creativity. designs with 3D elements such as pearl embellishments or glittery silver stones give the nails structure. Chrome nails in particular — which are trending in 2024 — are a constant source of inspiration for new ideas. Like many before me, I couldn’t resist the trend and opted for a milky nail polish with a silver chrome finish. Oksana tells me about the thriving art and beauty scene in her native Kyiv and the high standards of quality that are the norm there. And that’s exactly what Oksana wants to share with people here in Berlin. In intimate master classes and workshops, she shows you how to file, care for, and paint your nails at home — no professional equipment required. Whether it’s a simple polish, elegant design, strikingly long gels or press-ons, the compliments are guaranteed.

OF WOMEN, BEES AND CINEMA: THREE EXHIBITIONS AT C/O BERLIN

OF WOMEN, BEES AND CINEMA: THREE EXHIBITIONS AT C/O BERLIN

What does it mean to exist as a woman in our society? C/O Berlin is seeking the answers in two of their exhibitions. The main exhibition pays tribute to a pioneer of feminist art. Since the 1960s, Austrian artist VALIE EXPORT has challenged traditional gender roles and analyzed human behavior through performance art, film and photography. Her early performances, in particular, caused a sensation that has remained throughout the decades. Particularly “Tapp- und Tastkino” and “Aktionshose: Genitalpanik”, which criticized the “male gaze” in pornography. Export’s work criticizes misogyny in a visually powerful and humorous way. Her strength lies in her skillful exposure of social contradictions. Meanwhile, Catalan artist Laia Abril’s work addresses sexualized and systemic violence against women. At C/O, she presents a comprehensive research project on the power dynamics that enable rape. For her project “On Rape — And Institutional Failure”, she doesn’t directly reproduce stories of survivors but approaches them emphatically via archive material, legal texts and myths. From these fragments, she creates a haunting examination that has a lasting impact. Artist Aladin Borioli has also made a name for himself with a long-term project. This year, the young Swiss artist received the C/O Berlin Talent Award for “Bannkörbe”. He depicts how humans and bees co-exist through text, images and objects. For his extensive field research, he worked with bee researchers, scientists and beekeepers. In all three shows, the curators provoke political discussion, which there can never be enough of in Berlin.

THROUGH THE SAHARA WITHOUT A CELL PHONE: PANEL DISCUSSION ON FLEEING TO SEEK REFUGE BY MSF

THROUGH THE SAHARA WITHOUT A CELL PHONE: PANEL DISCUSSION ON FLEEING TO SEEK REFUGE BY MSF

Whether for navigation, translation or communication: the cell phone is one of the most important tools, especially when fleeing from persecution, war or violence. Unfortunately, they are too often confiscated by border police or criminal gangs, because of their value or to deter asylum seekers. More than a hundred million people worldwide are on the run. Reporting tends to focus on sea rescue or entry via the EU’s external borders. Journalist Özge Inan and migration expert Marie von Manteuffel will join moderator Anna Dushime on “Through the Sahara without a cell phone” to shed light on fleeing, migration, and how European interests influence African border policies. What challenges do migrants face? How do people cross the dangerous Sahara? And what medical aid is available along refugee routes? The work of MSF(Médecins sans frontières) and questions like these will be discussed in this panel. Journalist and writer Özge Inan approaches flight and migration from a legal perspective. In her novel “Natürlich kann man hier nicht leben” (Of course you can’t live here), she tells the story of a political escape between Turkey and Germany. At Holzmarkt, you can explore the sea rescue boat “Geo Barents” in the Mediterranean with VR glasses and find out how you can get involved — because solidarity and support are essential, especially in times of crisis. Join us for this important discussion and a time to put your cell phone down for two hours.

BLACK SITES, BOXES & HOLES — THE “POETICS OF ENCRYPTION” EXHIBITION AT KW DEMYSTIFIES THE DIGITAL REALM

BLACK SITES, BOXES & HOLES — THE “POETICS OF ENCRYPTION” EXHIBITION AT KW DEMYSTIFIES THE DIGITAL REALM

For a long time, the rooms of Auguststraße’s Kunst-Werke have exhibited many small exhibitions, rather than a singular, large body of work. That all changed in mid-February. Poetics of Encryption is the name of the current show, curated by Nadim Samman, which transports viewers to the landscapes of the digital world and its hidden mechanisms. Inspired by the book of the same name, it explores a landscape characterized by black sites, black boxes and black holes — secret places and opaque systems. Three chapters present work from more than forty international artists who explore the aesthetics and politics of encryption. In the “Black Site” chapter, the artwork addresses feelings of being trapped in a digital world. The work demonstrates strategies of search and recovery and negotiating the decryption and unlocking of technology, while “Black Box” explores the intellectual inaccessibility of omnipresent tech products and control systems. The artwork included in this chapter illustrates the tension between the visible interface and the invisible backend. Finally, “Black Hole” deals with the effects of compact digital archives and algorithmic processes on cultural space-time. Here, the consequences of “total datafication” are explored, while artists sound out the event horizon of the digital era. The exhibition offers a fascinating and surprisingly analog insight into the world of digital encryption and invites visitors to explore the challenges and opportunities of an increasingly digitized society.

BREAKFAST, SPECIALTY COFFEE, NATURAL WINE & MEDITERRANEAN APERITIVO SNACKS — MAMÁ CAFÉ BAR: THE ALL-DAY HANGOUT SPOT

BREAKFAST, SPECIALTY COFFEE, NATURAL WINE & MEDITERRANEAN APERITIVO SNACKS — MAMÁ CAFÉ BAR: THE ALL-DAY HANGOUT SPOT

Too early in the day to drink wine for some, too late to sip coffee for others? At Mamá Café Bar, you don’t have to choose one or the other because here, you get the best of both worlds. Since September 2023, Ana has established the ideal ‘all-day hangout spot’ with a café-wine bar. Located between Rudolfkiez and Victoriastadt, you can enjoy breakfast, brunch and aperitivo with Mediterranean influences. Symple provides the specialty coffee beans. Nico, co-founder of the Berlin coffee roastery, is not only Ana’s business partner but also her life partner. Together, they have been involved in the Berlin coffee scene for over ten years — including Milch Halle in Auguststraße and the new Symple Café in Prenzlauer Berg. But let’s get back to Mamá. In addition to the almost-in-house coffee beans, there is a large selection of homemade baked goods that you can order at the counter. Also available are breakfast classics à la carte, such as the fresh sourdough bread from Neumanns with butter, soft-boiled eggs, and cheese from Markthalle Neun. For aperitivo, Ana offers a colorful selection of natural wines that pair perfectly with the small Mediterranean dishes on offer.

Olives marinated in-house, thinly sliced Iberico on warm sourdough, burrata with anchovies, and the cheese platter, are a must. The plates are perfect for sharing, allowing your group to taste their way through the whole menu. A long wooden table at the back of the room provides plenty of space, from which you can get a small glimpse of the kitchen if you’re lucky. As the days grow longer and the temperatures rise, the tall French windows at Mamá will open, allowing you to enjoy your aperitivo both outside and inside accompanied by a fresh spring breeze. And this Friday (08.03.2024), Ana and Nico invite you to International Women’s Day, for which they’ve put together a fine selection of wines from talented winemakers. Fresh flowers will be in abundance, but we won’t reveal any more… The best thing to do is to drop by yourself and raise a glass with friends.
