SUMMER DRESSES, VINTAGE VASES & NEW FRAGRANCES — THREE POP-UPS FOR THE WEEKEND

SUMMER DRESSES, VINTAGE VASES & NEW FRAGRANCES — THREE POP-UPS FOR THE WEEKEND

In case you haven’t noticed, we can’t get enough of pop-ups. Allow us to present three more, offering everything from Portuguese summer fashion and extravagant cups to Cypriot jewelry and personalized fragrances. First up is the Reality Studio pop-up, which opens today (21.07.2022) at the Wolfen store in Mitte. There you’ll find a summer collection featuring cooling linen that transports you to Portugal – the location, incidentally, of the label’s headquarters and production. Looking for smart glasses to serve up summer drinks? Then be sure to stop by the Still Life Design pop-up, where you will find vases and vintage glasses that are usually only available online. The pop-up runs today, Friday and Saturday in jewelry label Sister’s shop in Schillerkiez. In addition to design objects, there is also handmade jewelry from Cyprus to try and buy. Finally, it’s time to get fragrant with the likes of “The Dreamer”, “The Lover”, “The Thinker” and “The Traveler”. These perfumes will be available to test and buy next Wednesday (27.07.) at the Apotheke pop-up at Hallesches Haus. Here, Apotheke’s founder will be on hand to treat early bird shoppers to a small perfume and a glass of champagne on the house.

ODE — LEMONY BITTER APERITIF MADE IN WEDDING

ODE — LEMONY BITTER APERITIF MADE IN WEDDING

For many, a summer weekend means an ice cold spritzer containing a certain wildly-popular red-orange apéritif. But there’s another mixer that has also been giving cocktails a kick: Ode. Created by Wedding-based duo Stefan Becker and Thorsten and brought to market in 2021, this lemony, sunny yellow apéritif brings a shot of sour and sweet to mixed drinks. The Berlin-made bitters comes in a nice brown glass bottle with a wooden ball lid and includes bergamot, Amalfi, Cedro and Verna lemons plus apricot, peach, cinchona bark, gentian root, wild thyme, artichoke, jasmine flowers and a touch of sea salt. Combined with the premium Rheinhessen riesling – created especially for Ode by star winemaker Nico Espenschied – the blend makes for a summer tipple par excellence. It’s made to be served on ice, with tonic or with sparkling wine – its combination of lemon, sweet stone fruits and Mediterranean herbs giving it a touch of the sun-drenched south. Berlin meets Bergamo – sounds like our kind of blend.

BVG BOATS AND BIKE TOURS — FERRY FROM WANNSEE TO KLADOW AND A TWO-WHEELED TOUR OF SACROWER SEE AND KÖNIGSWALD

BVG BOATS AND BIKE TOURS — FERRY FROM WANNSEE TO KLADOW AND A TWO-WHEELED TOUR OF SACROWER SEE AND KÖNIGSWALD

You probably don’t travel by ferry too often in Berlin, so when you do, you’ve got to make it special. The starting point for this round trip is Alexanderplatz, where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city by taking the S-Bahn or regional train to Wannsee station. From there it’s not far to the lakeshore and the BVG ferry F10, which departs every hour from the jetty. The boat’s route takes it past Strandbad Wannsee and the island of Schwanenwerder – both worthwhile stops – and across the Havel to the opposite side of the water at Kladow. Disembark there and you can head up the hill to the main road which leads to Sacrower See and Königswald. We cycled to the Potsdam / Sacrower Schloss bus stop before turning right onto the forest path directly to the lake and forest. Then it’s time for a dip in the cool and refreshing water, which is frankly wonderful. Afterwards the bike tour continues north and with a quick break at the Ritter Sacrow lakeside restaurant for a delicious apple strudel before cruising back to Kladow along the forest path. But the culinary journey doesn’t end here: an order of “Pommes rot weiß” is simply a must while waiting for the ferry back. If you fancy a little more exercise, the return bike trip to Berlin is recommended. Head from Wannsee past Schlachtensee and through to Dahlem for a little bit of villa spotting. Have fun!

FROM EGGS BENEDICT TO HOMEMADE PEPPER SYRUP — CULINARY DIVERSITY FOR BRUNCH AND DINNER AT NOMAD

FROM EGGS BENEDICT TO HOMEMADE PEPPER SYRUP — CULINARY DIVERSITY FOR BRUNCH AND DINNER AT NOMAD

As soon as you enter Nomad, the smell of coffee and all sorts of sweet and savory temptations hits your nose. Eggs Benedict with home-pickled salmon, deliciously sweet pancakes with a vanilla and cheesecake cream and perfect portobello mushrooms on sourdough. The challenge here is deciding what to order: as its name suggests Nomad serves up a smorgasbord of dishes inspired by different cultures. The restaurant’s founders, Nico and Max, spent a lot of time traveling and gathering inspiration before opening up shop on Borsigstraße in Mitte. Brunch is served until 15h, but it’s the evening service where things really get interesting, with a five-course dinner served alongside matching cocktails. This all-day line up has allowed the restaurant to gain a solid following among locals since opening in September 2021.

Love and attention also goes into the design, from the contemporary interior to the charming ceramic plates, each of which is individually designed and shaped. Outside, the spacious seating area stretches along the entire front window, making it the perfect place for a coffee in the morning sun. Spending time at Nomad puts a smile on your face, not just because of the food and drink but the pleasant atmosphere and approachability and warmth of the staff. You’ll leave well-nourished and ready to bring the good vibes into the rest of your day.

EYE-CATCHING METAL ACCESSORIES MADE IN NEUKÖLLN AND SCHÖNEBERG — HANS OBJECTS

EYE-CATCHING METAL ACCESSORIES MADE IN NEUKÖLLN AND SCHÖNEBERG — HANS OBJECTS

Aesthetically, functionally designed objects with clear forms and rich colors. That’s what you’ll find at Hans Objects, the Berlin product and interior design studio founded in 2021 by Anna and her architect partner Hans Brüderl. Like most of us, the pair spent an unusually large amount of time at home during the pandemic, highlighting the importance of home decor. The products the duo were inspired to create are characterized by their boiled-down, no-frills design. The collection includes the “Carla” tray made from one piece of aluminum molded in a metal workshop in Neukölln and powder coated in Schöneberg. Then there’s the Walter” coat rack and the “Ruby” shelf, which are both made of steel and come in two sizes and three colors. Simple and universal, the three robust and waterproof pieces are versatile, as happy being placed in the kitchen or hallway as in the bathroom. Whether you want to put them to practical use or enjoy them for their aesthetics, the items’ haptics, intuitive look and balanced proportions make them a joy to have around.
