MATERIAL — CAFE TURNED BAR SERVING COFFEE, NATURAL WINE AND EXPERIMENTAL BAKES

MATERIAL — CAFE TURNED BAR SERVING COFFEE, NATURAL WINE AND EXPERIMENTAL BAKES

Not far from Kollwitzplatz there is a cafe turned wine bar turned…well let’s just say it’s a nice place with lots of potential. Material is its name, and you might already know it as somewhere where you can buy Spanish natural wine from a guy called Carlos. Both the natural wines – filling one of the walls – and Carlos remain but since April 2023 they have been joined by Ebrahim who has helped turn the space into a haven of natural wine and coffee. The quality of the drinks is so good that Material works both as a cafe and as a wine bar. Ebrahim and Carlos couldn’t be more different in their ways, but encountered together they make the most wonderful and harmonious company. Carlos talks about his natural Spanish wines and their makers – all of whom he has met personally over the years – in just the kind of subtle, serene way you’d want in this environment. Ebrahim, meanwhile, is brimming with ideas, thoughts and stories. His love of experimentation is reflected in the interior: a colorful mix of vintage furniture, exposed brick walls, bright tiles and small details. The design somewhat resembles Kajumi, Ebrahim’s first cafe which he opened in Helmholtzkiez in 2020.

As with Kajumi, Ebrahim and Carlos created a lot of the furniture at Material themselves. There’s the large wooden table in the middle of the room that the pair transformed into a centerpiece using leftover tiles from the kitchen. Then there are the funnel-shaped cups and plates with playful illustrations by Ebrahim’s girlfriend Anchi Bub. As for the coffee, the Farben Kaffee served comes from Ebrahim’s own roastery in Brandenburg. You order it according to color: the brown coffee has chocolate and hazelnut notes, the yellow brew is sweet and sour, while the blue brims with floral flavors. The pastries are made by the 11-strong team working in an open kitchen. The philosophy is all about breaking the rules: the team experiment with different textures and techniques to create their multi-layered laminated doughs and in-house sourdough. “Making it simple” is the motto, but the baked goods are anything but ordinary. The cafe (well, cafe-bar) is set to open on 01.05.2023 with a selection of four comfort food dishes, including croquetas made with leftover sourdough and whipped ricotta with aubergine, oysters on the side and roasted nuts. Whether you come with company or alone, for a morning coffee or a post-work wine, Material offers the perfect place to unwind, discover and – most importantly – savor…

BERLIN IN MOTION — MOVEMENT WEEK FROM URBAN SPORTS CLUB & ON

BERLIN IN MOTION — MOVEMENT WEEK FROM URBAN SPORTS CLUB & ON

Four days, four locations, non-stop movement – this is the motto of Movement Week Berlin from Swiss sportswear brand On, who have teamed up with Urban Sports Club. The two brands have joined forces to create a free programme to get Berliners moving. Over four days (02–05.05.2023), you can take part in around 20 sports courses in four studios totally free of charge. The options are varied, ranging from boxing classes at Atomix to barre, pilates and yoga classes at John & Jane’s Soulbase to intensive bootcamp sessions at John & Jane’s Powerbase and Storm. It’s a fun opportunity to try something new, discover new trainers and meet like-minded people. Then, once your workout is over, you can get stuck into some after-workout snacks, including “vitamin bombs” from Daluma. Fancy joining? Places are limited, so get yourself signed up asap. If you’re already an Urban Sports member, you can register for the courses via the app – if not, you can register online for individual courses. Whether you want to start your day actively, are looking for a lunch break workout or prefer to get moving in the evening, these four days will have you spoilt for choice. The promise (or at least the hope) is simple: boost your body so you’ll keep on moving long after the four days are over…

55 GALLERIES, 80 ARTISTS, LOTS OF CUTTING-EDGE PERSPECTIVES — GALLERY WEEKEND IS BACK

55 GALLERIES, 80 ARTISTS, LOTS OF CUTTING-EDGE PERSPECTIVES — GALLERY WEEKEND IS BACK

Berlin only truly awakens from its hibernation when Gallery Weekend (28–30.04.2023) comes around. And well rested you should be given how many exhibition openings, events and talks are taking place over the coming days: 55 galleries throughout the city are taking part in the official program. The list of artists includes big names – like Cy Twombly at Galerie Bastianand Hito Steyerl at Esther Schipper – as well as many exciting newcomers. At gallery Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, the artist collective Slavs and Tatars explore the mythological significance of the melon in Central Asia. Kasia Korczak and Payam Sharifi are known for conveying whimsical narratives with depth and for humorously illustrating anthropological issues. German artist Britta Thie knows a thing or two about striking contemporary images: in her 2015 web TV series Translantics, she nails the tone of our wifi-addicted world. At Wentrup in Charlottenburg, she processes her own experiences as an actress on a major film set in a series of new works.

Isolation and smartphone addiction are also themes addressed by superstar painter Adrian Ghenie: his paintings and charcoal drawings can be seen in the impressive new rooms of Plan B on Strausberger Platz. The Chinese artist Cao Fei utilizes film as a medium. In her works at Sprüth Magers, the celebrated video artist sketches versions of the future that lie somewhere between metaverse and apocalypse. You can also look forward to video projects that slip into the utopian realm at Ebensperger in Wedding: here, German video artist Bjørn Melhus presents his new work, Gatekeepers, in which fictional surveillance and real borders collide. We are especially looking forward to Sophie Reinhold’s first solo exhibition at Galerie Nordenhake. Born in 1981, the Berlin-based artist will be showing new paintings that she makes from marble powder and bitumen, a tar substitute. So: on your marks, get set, go! You can get a good night’s sleep next weekend.

HELLO WORLD! HELLO FUTURE! — ART FROM SAMIRO YUNOKI AT THE MUJI KU’DAMM FLAGSHIP STORE

HELLO WORLD! HELLO FUTURE! — ART FROM SAMIRO YUNOKI AT THE MUJI KU’DAMM FLAGSHIP STORE

It’s been several years since my first visit to the Japanese Mecca of tidiness, but the desire to reorganize my house still overwhelms me every time I return. I am of course talking about Muji, where functionality and well-edited essentials are the name of the game. In June 2020, the brand’s Berlin Ku’damm Flagship Store moved into the iconic Marmorhaus, a former cinema whose original stuccoed ceiling still remains. In addition to shopping, the store offers culinary delights at the in-house cafe (including deliciously sticky mochi ice cream). The shop’s third floor is home to beautifully minimalist, thoughtfully designed furniture, travel and living accessories, storage modules, clothing, diffuser lamps and fragrance oils. Then there’s the Muji Community Market, where local artists, designers and illustrators take over a small space in the store to present their work for a fortnight at a time. The idea: giving creative minds a platform. For the current period (until 05.06.2023) the motto is “Hello World! Hello Future!”, with a special Life in Art exhibition by Samiro Yunoki (柚木沙弥郎), the 101-year-old Tokyo-born textile artist. Yunoki draws his inspiration from the Mingei Japanese folk art movement, which emphasizes the beauty of everyday objects. In addition to textile prints and 14 limited edition lithographs, the collaboration has produced a collection of design items including washi tapes, socks, scarves and tote bags. Time to make some space at home, head over to Muji and start reimagining your style. Hello Future indeed.

ART MEETS THE ART OF CHAMPAGNE — RUINART POP-UP BRINGS SCULPTURES AND DRINKS TO THE AMTSALON

ART MEETS THE ART OF CHAMPAGNE — RUINART POP-UP BRINGS SCULPTURES AND DRINKS TO THE AMTSALON

French artist Eva Jospin has a thing for cardboard. Her sculptures are constructed solely from layer upon layer of this most basic of materials. But the works that result are anything but pedestrian: they are huge, highly intricate worlds that often resemble dense forests. A recurring theme for Jospin is the richness of the land, a motif that is at the center of her collaboration with Champagne house Ruinart during this year’s Gallery Weekend (27.04–02.05.2023). Inspired by the terroir that gives the drink its characteristic taste, the artist has created an exhibition of sculptures, drawings and embroideries that will be on show at the Ruinart pop-up in the Amtsalon art space in Charlottenburg. Besides the exhibition, the pop-up (which runs throughout Gallery Weekend) will host a Ruinart bar that will be serving bubbles daily until 20h. Art, conversation and a glass of Champagne: all the ingredients you’ll ever need for an inspiring Gallery Weekend.
